I don't re-call hearing this except when they were mentioning private housing which will be out later. They said they would open up new instances for housing as they fill up. The only thing you'd potentially have to worry about is coordinating with another FC to buy houses at around the same time to get in the same housing instance, if that's something you care about.
EDIT: RE: Archeus
You won't have to be worried about RMTs buying/squatting houses because you can't sell them afterwards.

Another terrible idea in a long list of ideas this game has seen, seriously apart from the top 5% and RMT who else does this help?
no one...Really i just got a Halloween Dimension in Rift (a full Haunted house and surrounding areas for free in game event) why would i need to to farm my life away on gil so i can afford some virtual FF house, honestly...
What it helps is players to decide they are tired of bad decisions and to move on.
Dimensions are about a ten million times better designed housing system than I've seen in any MMO, especially ARR. It's depressing. Why can't we get that kind of system elsewhere. D:

I just thought of something else, this will kill small FCs in game as they cannot compete with the large ones so their Guildies will leave to the bigger ones with houses etc..
because it happened the same way in GW2 with similar content..
FC's will recruit we have a House etc and the other FC without will die badly..

I think LoTRO did it best. They instanced the neighbor hoods so you walk in choose which street you wanted to be on. Then everyone could have a big, medium or small house. What the housing system SE has here is a very obvious attempt at removing money. They want to remove lot of money from the game. If the game lasts 3-5 years and none of the servers have any money then I believe this sort of things will happen.

Don't wanna pay so much? get it a few weeks later. Want it now? Compete for prices with everyone else who also wants it right then and there.
It's like the PS3. You want it right at release? Ok, $900. You wait 6 months? Ok, $600. Newer model even later? That was around $400 I believe.
The auction system is the only real solution to server economy disparity. Non-legacy servers don't have quite the funds of legacy servers, so if it was a fixed price that they could match, then it would be CHEAP on legacy servers.

ONE! ONE! person looked into this?
30 plots per instance Land will be auctioned, no "official" house price yet just guesses but it is a separate purchase, once and instance is full no one else can enter that one and a new one will be created. So.... I have no idea what the hell more than 1/2 of you are going on about running out of land or availability.
People that want a house now will pay good money for them once the "rich" people have what they want land plots will get cheaper and others will start being able to afford plots.
This is a game it is not real life. People play it for fun. So if everyone wants a huge house and has the gil for it then everyone should get one. They should not have to wait until everything is purchased then attempt to out bid each other for the biggest plot of land so they can bid on the big house. It is a bad system because it is an obvious gil sink. A good system would remove gil in a way that seems fun. I fully expect to se content added where we get mugged next.

It's not just a house...It's a home.
It gives us a sense of belonging in the game. It makes us closer together as an FC. We can plan events, hold meetings, decorate the house, roleplay, and do all these bonding activities. It gives us roots in the game so that we are less likely to hop and hop to another MMO. It gives us all these things and more.
But why waste my breath because anyone who has to ask such a question will clearly never understand.
Please correct me I'm wrong:
1) This is Free Company Houses -- therefore people can pool together money to buy one. If the price is 1Million and you have 20 people in your FC, then you can easily pool 50,000 each (this is nothing). In fact, 1 million is not much at all. Obviously bigger FC with more money can get bigger house. But that makes sense. A small FC can work together to build a nice little house and furnish it. More cozy.
2) Private Homes are in the future -- They indicate 6 months or so later. And based on what Yoshi said a long time ago, a person should be able to make enough Gil from doing the full story line that they can almost? buy a house. So I expect prices to be lower. Given all the free stuff we already have handed to use, its nice to have a couple things that you have to put a little effort into.
3) Given that land becomes more available over time, the price of land should go down. Instances are added (land is added) based on demand (which is the opposite of real life). So yes, you could buy now... but I would expect the price to go down later, so not a good investment.
