The pickaxe isn't half bad. I forget how hard it hits, but I remember being surprised by it when I accidentally attacked a fate mob a while back. It's probably not going to kill most stuff solo, but it still works a lot better than poking them with a sewing needle!

You can start and finish every quest with every class, so long it is not a leve quest or a class/job quest.
Just switch to a battle class for the fight part and switch back to the DoL/DoH class after it.
