Whatever you want to call it, he is making personal attacks that have no basis (e.g. declaring somebody to be the "worst player on a server" because you don't like the posts they make on the forums.)

I'm more concerned about permissions than size, to be honest. Making gil an "all or nothing" thing really is asking for trouble.

I will have to go find it, but a dev post officially confirmed the next patch will add a "deposit only" permission for the gil box.

500 members isn't a community, it's a clusterf**k, simple as that.
Like someone mentioned on one of the earlier pages, quality>quantity.

Maybe you should focus on just those members who actively contribute to your FC, and cull the rest.
Excessive baggage is needless, there is no pride to be had by having an excessive FC member tally, but there is pride for sure in having a well associated and lively community.

I've been in my fair share of 'large community' guilds over many MMOs, and frankly, the only people that really talk are the people in the higher echelons. Usually within ten minutes of prime time you can figure out the big wigs and higher more well known members just due to the fact they talk more. I was in a guild on SWTOR and just by being social I ended up becoming good friends with the guildmaster himself.(This is a big thing, as it wasn't just a SWTOR guild, but an actual gaming guild.)

That isn't necessarily a good thing, even the company I'm in now has seldom people that actively engage in group discussion and friendly banter, I find myself often than not talking to no one.
