I'm sick of the doomsayers too, but I'm still critical of the game in some aspects.
That said, Yoshi-P has done a hell of a job creating a newer vision for FFXIV and leading a team to do it. While some people may not agree with these changes, he still deserves credit for what he has done. The game now appeals to a wider audience than 1.0 did, it feels more Final Fantasy like, he's been open with the community, the list goes on.

Congrats on making the dream team Yoshi-P!

Congrats to Yoshida on this appointment!

    however...

Why is Hiroyuki Ito not on this panel? The director of the best FF games in the series (FFVI, FF Tactics, FFIX, and FFXII)-- should be the head of this panel, and he isn't even on it.

Yet Motomu Toriyama (FFX-2, FFXIII, FFXIII-2) holds a spot.

I'm not confident in the future of FF games.

That's arguable because in many ways, the way the game was developed takes a lot of Final Fantasy out of the game as well. I will not deny Yoshida his credit of making ARR into a better game from an overall standpoint. However he has not earned his place to be able to sit on a table to judge an overall series quality (neither does Toriyama). Yoshi-P has not made an AAA game, which makes him a B player still.

Despite all of the flack XIII gets people seem to not realize it's actually like almost every other FF game - main story is extremely linear (FFIX is VERY linear for a VERY long time, XIII just made it that much more obvious.)

Perhaps, but for an MMO it does pretty well.

i wish there was a refund, but alas, i'll just consider my CE + 3 months sub as a lesson learned. i fell for the sweet talks and grand promises, only to be left disappointed and unsatisfied.
If FFXIV leaves you unsatisfied and disappointed, then you will never be happy with anything, ever. What exactly did you want the game to do to satisfy you? Clean your house? Shampoo your hair? Walk your dog? COME THE HELL ON, it's a fun game that caters to FF fans and gives them what they were asking for since the original FFXIV came out. Whatever, you won't be missed, not even a little, so move on already. If it's not doing it for you now, then it won't do anything for you by the time your sub runs out. Consider it a financial loss and don't play it if you don't like it. For example, if I buy a burger from Burger King and I come home and it smells bad, has rotten meat inside of it and maggots crawling around in it, should I eat it because I paid for it? Of Course Not, so since your FFXIV is full of maggots and rotten meat, then why are you still playing it? Go play something else, but I can't imagine what though, cause if a FF-fan service game isn't good in your eyes, then you aren't going to enjoy anything else you play. Seems to me like you are just one of those people that just likes to complain just to hear themselves talk.

    The illusion of choice

    FFIX did it right.

and FFXIII did it very, very wrong.

Regarding his design for FFXIII, Motomu Toriyama:
...thinks that it becomes very difficult to tell a compelling story when the player is given a huge amount of freedom to explore. Toriyama has stated that the aim of the linear game design used in the first half of Final Fantasy XIII was to feel like watching a film. This was done to absorb the player into the story and to introduce them to the characters and their battle abilities without becoming distracted or lost.source

    According to him,
"the most important aspect of a Final Fantasy game is the characters"
This betrays a complete misunderstanding of what the core engagement is for FF games. It's not the characters, its ADVENTURE. Without main characters, what made FFI such a huge success?? Or FFIII? Or FFVIII?

I think he should get into doing films or drama games (ie Heavy Rain, Last of Us) because that approach is not suited for RPGs.

In your opinion of course. When I play this game, all I think is FF all the way. It feels very much like it belongs in the FF series to me. Yoshi-P took a game most never even wanted to touch and made it into something we wanted to try. How that doesn't define success is a mystery.

Oh, and with the sub base they currently have, that's a AAA game. Sorry.

That's good to hear for you, but like I said he has made a game people enjoyed and destroyed it at the same time.

AAA is not determined by amount of subs either. Perhaps from a company standpoint, but the public/reviewers determine that quality level. The Last of Us is AAA, Grand Theft Auto 5 is AAA, Final Fantasy XIV was like an F, ARR is a solid B-.

Maybe they asked him and he turned it down? I completely agree that a group dedicated to the future of the series should have one of its innovators included, so there's probably a reasonable explanation for why he isn't.
