WARNING!! Windows 8.1 Professional N please read if your going to upgrade

Do not install Windows 8.1 N version.

the N version of 8.1 does not carry any of the media centre dll's and will not play any movies. THIS INCLUDES THE OPENING MOVIES FOR FFXIV!!!

if you do a fresh install the N version and re-install ffxiv the game will not load past the title screen.

on first boot this game plays the default start movie before going to the character select screen but if the movies is unable to play the game gets stuck and will not load.

I went back to windows 8 and everything is working again, i will be installing the non N version of 8.1 later today when it is released. i will keep you all posted.

Please be careful, i dont want everyone to get stuck like i did.

There's a "Media Feature Pack" download available for Windows 8 N and KN versions. It's mentioned under the MSDN Knowledge Base Article 2703761. Have you tried installing that for your Windows 8.1 N?

Actually, as a vendor, most of my customers request 8. -- It actually performs significantly better than 7 in most fields.

Would the average IT upgrade? No.
Would the average gamer upgrade? They should.

There is some legitimacy to using 8 over 7 because of the performance gains.

You don't even need a third party addon to get rid of Metro UI anymore. It is just like Windows 7, but faster.
As for the OP...why would you use the Neutered N version than QQ about it's limitations? Oo

You only need to get used to, is the "strange touch based" design (if you are using a regular mouse and keyboard).

I mean... Who designed a feature where you have to go to the top of the screen in order to have your mouse cursor change to a hand, so that you can press and hold the mouse button in order to grab hold of an App and drag it all the way down to the bottom to close it? It makes sense with a Touch interface, not so much with a mouse. (^_^ )

When you get used to that, Windows 8 runs smooth as silk.

Bingo. It's a mystery to me why anybody in their right mind would support Windows 8. They need to know how bad it sucks, and that desktop users don't care about tablet BS systems.

Please do just the smallest bit of research before talking. It's a small upgrade, but never the less superior to Windows 7, and you can disable Metro/ have the Start button.

Ah, good. They've released an official MFP for Windows 8.1. I wasn't able to find it, since the MSDN page kept offering the Windows 8 version only. So, I figured that either they didn't release it yet or you could use that version on Windows 8.1 as well.
