If I wanted PvP, I wouldn't be playing Final Fantasy.
PvP is w/e. If it gets/keeps more customers great...but seriously, no idea why you people insist on molding RPG's in this fashion.
Nor do I appreciate it too much when the inevitable, and impossible attempts to "balance" everything, impact PvE.

At some point in time, that might happen. But given the way this games combat system works, not to mention the way we interact with the environment, PvP is going to take a backseat for a while when it comes to it affecting PvE in any truly noticeable way. I mean we might see some ability adjustments, but nothing too major. Unlike games like WoW, FFXI and FFXIV both seem to focus on the visual presentation with a higher priority. Animation plays a significant part to much of this game, changes made for the sake of PvP would jeopardize that and force the system to be adjusted greatly (potentially for the better). That's going to take a long time to accomplish, and by then, it might end up being that PvP is merely an extra activity to the devs. Competitive, but nowhere to the degree of an e-sport attempt.

This is a false problem people make up to fight PvP's existence. PvE rarely if ever suffers because of PvP. It should never be a dealbreaker because it just doesn't cause the problems people think it will cause.

PvP's mere existence does not harm or otherwise impact PvE. In the case that it does, it speaks of other design problems in the game as a whole. PvP by itself does not innately harm anything.

PvP is really something I have to try before I know if I like it or not. Some games do it well while other games don't do it very well. I enjoyed Ballista in FFXI, but we all know how horribly unbalanced it was. There was no sort of 'competition' -- just friendly matches among people who wanted to spend their time doing that. If the PvP in FFXIV is going to be more 'competitive' (rankings, rewards, specific armor, abilities, etc), the I am simply assuming that more thought/effort will be put into it.

As far as I am concerned, people should NOT be upset unless PvE and PvP gear affects the other. For example, if you rush into PvP with the BEST PvE gear, you might destroy everyone. It gives you an unfair edge BECAUSE you progressed further in PvE. On the other hand, if you can faceroll PvE with PvP gear... well, that's really not very fair to the PvE players who did PvE to get the best gear. If the two are kept SEPARATE, I don't see either side complaining.

There are a few issues regarding PvP that I am concerned about -- even before I get the chance to test it. Latency/positioning is not the best in this game. You'll notice it in Titan (hard) when people claim that they were out of something but weren't. The work-around for this is to memorize abilities and run when you know they are coming. In PvP, you can't know with certainty WHAT an opponent is going to do. You're stuck guessing. I envision mages having issues if melee choose to 'dance' around them. I also don't see 'pillaring' as 100% effective, either... or perhaps it will be TOO effective... I've noticed issues already with PvE when I am casting on a mob that runs past me. Even if I move my character's direction to continue facing the mob, sometimes it will still 'interrupt' my spell.

The PvP video showed a lot of people 'standing still'. I imagine this was done to show the different abilities they could use, but this is NOT how PvP is played in a fast-paced game (which FFXIV strives for). I really, really worry about the issues I mentioned...

PvP also grants developers time to continue working on large updates. I'm not a fan of it, but I understand that PvP is a must for every online game these days.

It does, all the more reason it needs to come but soon. It is a great way to keep people playing when they've exhausted other content.

I hope they will add open world pvp one day.
they will never, ever do this. I could only see a slight possibility of a designated PvP server where open pvp is allowed, but with the current lore of the game, open PvP just doesn't make sense because the city states are not at war with each other.

I'm fine with pvp coming to the game. However I'm not one for PVP so the way I look at it is if a bunch of people want to go PVP that's cool because it means there will be more demand for PVE Endgame content. However if we have a static group and our Geared to the Teeth healer says "Im going to pvp tonight, no raid for me" then I might be a little upset. But it is what it is.

I am excited about player housing though and what pvp might intertwine with there. Mostly I want to see gardening in FFXIV so I can grow stuff in my house while I'm sleeping. And I'd like to see world mobs drop stuff that's useful besides Fleece.

I wonder if you ever played a little game called WoW, where literally 80% of all balance changes were made because of pvp and that starts the never ending cycle of making sure classes are still competitive in pve which then makes them balance pvp(guess what happens next?). Maybe you were one of the people who kept white knighting it saying it was nothing but coincidence they keep making all those changes which in turn effect one or the other, while thinking that though you cried yourself to sleep every night knowing it was all a lie.
