Square, why the paranoia about the game's music?

I've never seen a company crack down as hard on a community for putting the game's music on YouTube. The company cared not one bit when 1.0 was around, but now that you've launched the game again, any mention of having any piece of sound from 1.0 or 2.0 and you come down hard with copyright claims.

It seems a bit excessive. Especially considering you have other MMOs or games with full soundtracks up and absolutely no issue has been brought up by the company. If you're so concerned with lost revenue, then why not just put ads in the videos and be done with it?

The only reason I can fathom is a release of the soundtrack in digital media will be forthcoming. If so, then fantastic! I'll be buying it, as the music is great.

Simple, it's their copyright, they can enforce it however they wish. The old 1.0 tracks that had been on Youtube for ages were probably tolerated by SE as has been said because until recently there was no complete soundtrack for 1.0 available. However, with Before Meteor's release, that's no longer an excuse, and hence SE finally brought the axe down on Youtube users who uploaded it.

As for ARR tracks, there is already the Sounds of Eorzea album that came with the Collector's Edition with the new city and zone themes, and a great deal of other tracks used in ARR were actually from 1.0, so there's only a comparative handful of new material still waiting to be released. Have a little patience - SE will release it soon enough.

I seriously doubt mighty Square Enix will vanquish the mean ole music pirates.

If I had words of wisdom for SE, give it up and don't waste your resources.

There isn't much to the CE soundtrack from what I can tell. I don't think Praetorium's theme is in it, nor are the boss fights.

I was referring to Before Meteor and EF. SoE is hardly a OST.

That is something entirely different, ARR uses completely original music or/and 100% owned by Square. EB was homage after homage of music not owned by Nintendo.

Except you can look up and listen to literally every other song that has ever been created by them, all of which have soundtracks out there. So why just target 1.0?

The same reason why popular musicians do the same, because they believe that eliminating other sources of the music will encourage people to buy the soundtrack.

So... this is a rough subject for me.
My personal philosophy is... all information should be free, even music,
So I kind of side with you.

Then again, they pay money for copyrights, it is their creation.
I dunno, I'm kind of torn in half about this debate.

I'll point out again that most of the time in those cases, copyright claims come from the record companies, not usually from the musicians. I'm no "freetard" - I pay for all of my music - but YouTube and Hulu have methods by which they can still get revenue to the people who want it. If that wasn't the case, then Hulu wouldn't exist at all.
