Not ever helpful? You would be mistaken, however, let me put it this way. You want lock on mode, to continue what it does, and let you properly strafe around a target, but IF you press anything that's not left, right or forward, you want it to immediately flip you around and run away. You want only ONE direction to be legacy while locked on, but to keep the rest the same. Lock on is designed to keep you FACING the target which is how it makes it so you can easily strafe on a controller. Which is why I said it is intended to compensate for the shortcomings of controller/legacy movement. If you don't want to backpedal, you unlock.

You can still be facing the opponent, lock on functions in other games make the camera lock on and face the opponent at all times, but not necessarily the character. Make it a separate option outside of legacy so players who do want to backpedal can. Is that good enough?

I mean we have little quality of life options to even have the player character hold their weapon out for an extra 2 seconds out of battle. Surely an easy toggle option wont kill the game.

I find the mode enjoyable because it allows certain classes that use positional bonuses to easily strafe around the opponent. It is a death wish though to even bother using. Having to break lock constantly only hinders the player and can get tedious.
