I get it, the whole "Paladins wear circlets in FFXI!" thing. Yeah, great. But it makes no sense! That thing won't protect my head! Of course, the stats say this:

is better than this at protecting my head:

In the end it really doesn't matter, per se, in terms of what must be fixed and changed, but I thought I'd share my petty complaints either way!
Because Paladin AF1 & AF2 wear a Coronet as part of their Royal Sultanate guard uniform. Traditionally Paladins are sworn to the Sultana of Ul'dah (Knights) and are considered a form of militaristic nobility - traditionally in the UK/France/Spain Noblemen would wear a Coronet in court to distinguish their rank and power. Coronet literally translate to "wreath" in Greek & Roman tradition wreaths were worn on the head as "symbols of martial victory, crowning a successful commander during his triumph".

If you want to put your head in a bucket that's fine - but at least try to understand the lore behind what a Paladin is in the realm of Eorzea and where Square Enix's team drew their inspiration from.

So weld the coronet onto a helmet... or have it forged into the helmet as part of the aesthetic! (I'm kidding... I hate darklight armor and actually look forward to getting AF2 for Paladin.)

I'm all for vanity slots though, especially if it limits you to using vanity slots only when you could equip the item. Some people may love heavy armor in this game but the way your head bobs at that angle was annoying. Its why I stopped tanking, that and people being inept assholes who still yell orders while failing miserably (or yell at others for lag.) Now I wasted all those tomes on DRG. *le sigh* At least I'll have leveled the right class if they ever do add Sam off of lnc. /end digression

I know exactly where SE came from, and I don't care. My job is to have giant ogres hit my head with a club. Thus I should have my head protected! Logic > Lore inspiration

Actually a medieval soldier of any status would wear a helmet all the time in battle, otherwise all it would take is a rock, stray arrow or some lucky bastard who's good with a sword, rather than go into battle without a helmet they would just wear one without a visor. Arms, legs and head would of been the most common places to wear armor on. Anyone that didn't wear armor only didn't because they couldn't afford it, battle for a fully armored mounted knight was a relatively risk free affair for more than a few reasons.

Oh, trust me, I've done my fair share of complaining about Darklight Gauntlet's lack of chainmail sleeves. But when I get AF2, they'll be back, so I figured that's not worth complaining about. I may be in AF2 for a very, very long time, though, so no helmet strikes me as silly. I'm not going into war without 30,000 soldiers I need to keep in my peripheral vision, I'm typically fighting 1-5 enemies at once, so a helmet is highly advantageous. And I can open the visor on most helmets!

As long as we're making petty cosmetic complaints, the armour that has the head and body firmly attached to each other would be a death trap for anyone being attacked by anything! You wouldn't have any concept of what was happening around you if you couldn't adjust your gaze to look in different directions without moving your entire torso!

Right so doing magic and having lights flying out of your butt when you Shield Oath is totally logical too. Not to mention that you're fighting a faerie mythical creature that exists only in mythology and fantasy.

Put a helmet on when you get a vanity slot. Personally I like the aesthetic of both Gallant & Valor Coronet.
