AF+1 Costs WAY Too Much

Well~ i don't mind THAT much it can take years all i care BUT!:
Problem is this is NOT the best gear in the game, we will have level cap increase next year and that will unlock us something like AF+2 or other.
Second problem to me that there is too few places that award decent amount of mythology stones and it's really really annoying to spam same thing over and over.

I agree with the OP's sub-point that this gear will be deprecated by the time that it is physically possible to have obtained it all. That much is kind of goofy.

But I'm OK with AF+1 gear being a little special. :]

Actually, AF2/Allagan IS the best gear in the game. You're right that it wont be that way forever, but until that point... it is, indeed, best in game.
Just a small clarification. I actually agree with what you're saying though.
My Final Fantasy week consists of 3 AK runs and coil 1-4 on Monday. And the rest of the week I may choose to bang my head on twintania or try to make virtual currency gathering. sad

It's pretty stupid, especially considering, IIRC, Bahamut Weapons will be top tier and probably a damn sight easier (in comparison) to obtain over Relic +1.


This is Tanaka-level stupidity right here. What I loved about this game right away was the seemingly apparent departure from FFXI's dated "grind until you have no social life left" mentality. Nothing, I repeat, NOTHING should take more than a month tops to obtain. Especially in a game where crafting is supposed to be highly relevant, to the point of surpassing rare drops with the right materia. I thought YP understood the concept that this is a game, and people have lives outside of it. You can make stuff hard to get/long term goals without turning them into excessively repetitive and demoralizing grinds. Plus as the OP pointed out, what happens when the level cap goes up (and it will, IIRC YP said it'll happen within the 1st year of release) and all those months you spent on that gear are suddenly invalidated?

It's stupid, and simply boosting the stats to keep them at parity with newer drops in later updates doesn't justify it either. I think I can safely speak for most (not all, there are some massochists out there) FFXI vets when I say we don't need another round of Mythic Weapons or Salvage Armor.

5 months of straight AK runs for a single gearset

Correct me if I'm wrong but didn't Yoshi mention a new dungeon for endgame along with Crystal Tower? Both of which should drop M. Tomestones. So no, AK will not be the only option. There may even be a chance to get more at a quicker pace in CT, considering it was suppose to be the predecessor dungeon to Bahamut.

These are coming in 2.1. In a month. Yoshi even said that his goal was to have new content every 3 months. This will probably include more ways to get better items (which is always expected of new content). I'm sure after 2.1 drops, 2.2 will probably make Allagan gear as accessible as AF+1 currently is, and introducing a new dungeon raid with better gear than Allagan. 2.3 will follow suit, and so on and so forth in the same fashion all MMO's are designed.

You're supposed to raid for gear, not easy tokens for gear. That being said, the token system is there if your luck sucks and you need to fill out some extra pieces. The game is not designed to reward you with a full set of raid gear for doing easy 4man content. Its not a terribly hard concept to understand. In order to get a full set of raid gear in a timely manner you have to do a lot of raiding. The progression goes:

AF > Wanderers palace > AK > Crystal Tower (not in yet) > Binding Coil

Theoretically you spam AK for full gear. Whatever you cant get, you use phil tomes to buy darklight pieces. Then you move on to Crystal Tower after a full set of ilvl60+ gear. From there you farm your i80 gear in Crystal, and what you can't get you buy with myth tomes (some i90 pieces). Once you're in i80+ gear you move on to binding coil. You do coil to get a full set of i90gear.

You're not supposed to spam for tokens so you can buy easy gear. If you choose to, the game punishes you by having it take forever.

I think the OP is saying it's not challenging though.. just time consuming. Given time, EVERYONE will have AF2 regardless of skill level.

Making it take forever doesn't make it any less easy... just cheaply attempts to prolong content that is pretty slim to begin with

Not sure if there are any people from the olden MMO days..but....5 months to be completely geared really isn't that bad. If any of you played Everquest in it's hayday 5 months was good...for ONE ITEM... I remember it took me like 5+ months to get my BiS chest...and another few montsh for one more item...and another for more.

People are spoiled these days but I suppose if it were still this way I wouldn't have the time needed to invest. Back when guilds competed for the same mobs and it could take months just for an attempt on a mob..and when you wiped another guild swooped in and jacked your mob. Back in the days of DKP and you had to raid for months just to have enough points to ROLL on an item..not win it..just to roll!!!

It's not about the length of time as much as it is the method of acquiring tomes... Still doing AK on Mondays 2 months from now sounds AWFUL

Why should it be challenging? Cuz its AF? By the time one can afford a full set of AF2, it will no longer be the best armor to have in the game. Its designed this way on purpose. AF is just entry-level stuff into the next tier of content. In 5 months (mark my words) AF2 will be the entry-level gear to get to the next gear tier. In other words, it will be like AF1 is now. Now casual gamers can still progress w/o having to worry about having to do raids. The catch is that they will always have the bare minimum in gear to try new content, and will progress much slower.

More likely than not, the next gear tier will release before that 5month mark though.
