You don't have to return to the market boards to check prices, you can do that from within the sell item interface (by this I'm referring to the box that comes up asking how many you want to sell of the selected item and how much you want to sell them for) when you're telling your retainer to sell something. You can find a button somewhere near the top of that interface and it'll bring up the market board entry for that item. From there, you can check current prices and past sale prices.
