It'd be pointless to place one seeing how things are in the game.
I believe the real reason WoW did this is that their database didn't really track a lot of holiday gear in any way other than making it white. Some was soulbound - but not all, or they could have just said "soulbound white gear is off limits". Some of this was items like very ld fire festival gear that looked a bit like tank gear while being useable by any class. White gear also included a lot of 'non-combat clothing. You can still buy an assortment of wedding dresses and Korean traditional gowns in Stormwind that are white gear.
    - it was just a way to cut down on the work of going through old gear and putting everything into either column A or B.

I'd say gear of the same type, and wearable by your class - as a sensible limit.

If they add restrictions to seasonal gear then what is the point of releasing them in the 1st place? To get it, try it on for a few minutes then keep it in storage for the rest of the time?

Same point it was before a vanity system was introduced, for the hell of it. I didn't see anyone throw their arms in the air when vanity gear was released previously in this game or others before vanity "systems" were about (collecting egg rings, bikinis, fish swords or what have you).

"What is the point, I dont even want this garbage if I cant wear it in combat", thats the point it was just for fun not for anything serious. I'm really not seeing how not being in the vanity system makes vanity gear worthless argument is applicable, even though repeated a few times in this thread.

Even WoW has taken a stance to keep silly items out of their transmog system, a game that is already pretty silly Xd (unless they changed the transmog rules since I've last seen).

I'm not sure Op realises that "shit flows downhill" in FFXIV.

There is little to no "Disciple of Magic" seperation in gear, generally caster gear has the "All classes" descriptor - so any class can wear caster potato sacks, be they tank, gatherer or archer. Conversely, even cloth martial gear (ie. cotton actons), are given the "disciple of war" descriptor, and cannot be worn by casters, crafters or gatherers. But can be worn by tanks or martial DPS classes.

The full list of who can wear what stands as this:
Tanks: All plate armours, scale armours, leather armours, martial cloth and caster cloth
Dragoons: Scale armours, leather armours, martial cloth, caster cloth
Archers, Monks: Leather armours, martial cloth, caster cloth
    All casters: Caster cloth only

This downhill flow means that technically ALL gear is "tank gear", while "caster gear" means "The small number of items designated as 'all classes'". If SE does as you think, and limits vanity options to the gear a class can normally equip, then casters get screwed - not even being able to wear a cotton shirt or kecks; while tanks can legitly wear a frilly maid dress into combat (No joke, they can already do that just their stats would suck)

It only seems fair that casters have the ability to display heavier armours as their vanity options - there's pretty good grounds to allow this too; Louisoix wore/wears an acton and plate greaves (disciple of war only), Paplyamo wears plate gauntlets and leggings (tanks only) - plenty of NPC's with known classes flagarently violate the established rules of what classes can wear what armours in order to look cool. And speaking as a caster myself, I'll be extremely sad if I'm forced to only wear variations on a potato sack, while my tank colleagues can tank wearring whatever they damn well please

Fundamentally, I don't see any good reasons for restricting cosmetic options

Presumably, the person wearing it has, y'know, leveled the class to get it. >_> I think that goes without saying.

This would defeat the entire purpose of a wardrobe system.

My ultimate opinion? Just do it like Rift. Full-blown wardrobe slots. Anyone can equip any quality of armor of any type in the slots as long as they own the item. If Squee really wants to make me happy, they'd implement the same ticky box system that Rift's wardrobe feature has. Let me choose which parts of my wardrobe to display and hide, from the hat to chest to pants to boots to gloves.

Oh, and for the love of god, please separate "face" from "head". It makes zero sense that I can't wear glasses with a hat.

I think maybe you're referring to the accessories?

If I remember correctly, all caster gear have the DoM classification while all physical DD gear have the DoW classification. I don't think there are caster gear (i.e. with INT/MND and no STR/DEX) that has the all-classes classification.

I'll be satisfied if it simply means I'll be able to run around in my coliseum body and leg pieces even if I'm really equipped in Darklight or something.
