Lv40 Scholar Job Quest is soooo hard o.O

I had similar problems but cleared the quest about 2 days ago. You know, the tonberry reveal was kind of a minor spoiler, so let's try to avoid much more.

You have to be wary of the adds. They will inflict disease on their target, so any healing you do will be negligible while the adds are attacking. Fortunately, they are melee and will converge on you and your companion by default.

The best way therefore is to have Selene out with the spellspeed buff (eos is less useful because she will not heal the npc), and you apply your dots on the main boss. At some point, the adds will spawn. Let them get close to the boss and then use "Bane" on the boss and hit all of the adds in your aoe. The adds will die in 4-5 seconds, heal your npc up, and you repeat for 3 waves of adds. After that, it's a curbstomp as you can outheal any damage without the disease debuff.

I had to do each one at once to see the mechanics then figured out how to combat each of them with the dps pet or the tank pet then finished it on the 2nd round

Hmm I'm using the gear I use as SMN so even without adds, the 'main monster' does more damage than I can heal (my SCH is just for the fun of having the class to fill roles when helping low lvl FC friends so mind didn't had any extra points on it).

I'll try go all-out on the main again, last time I almost had it. Maybe with Selene's buff I might nail it just spamming Ruin1+2 and dots.

I did this with twin adder gear, stats split between smn and sch. I just used ruin2 on the adds and bane after adding stats to torn berry. Only had to focus on healing tank after torn berry did a big attack. I used my support fairy all the way, worked out fine.

+3 or +4 in Magic Damage and no other decent attributes (like spell speed, crit and int), that's why I'm still using the lv30 one
Still haven't found anything with higher level but still keeping good stats other than the main damage increase.

Weapon Damage (In this case Magic) is the biggest factor that lets you heal more or DPS more. +1 WD for SCH equals about the equivalent to 8.7 Mind. At level 50 it's not as critical (As an example: people still use Allagan Grimore (i95) in Second Coil of Bahamut instead of all the inbetween books until they get the HA Grimore (i115)), but for lower levels, you'll always want to keep WD updated

So I tried the quest a couple times and ran into likely the issue everyone else has had, friendly NPC dies, can't heal him and can't do enough damage. Im lvl 40 and my gear is some stuff high 20s some stuff low 30s some stuff mid 30s so it's not great so I'm thinking I need better gear bc it's a DPS race. Then it hits me. CLERIC STANCE. It's a cross class skill you get from low level conjurer. It swaps your MIND and INTELLIGENCE and most likely your MIND is higher so that INTELLIGENCE getting the boost is a DPS boost and using CLERIC STANCE beat if first try.

Dot up the Tonberry and have Selene out if adds don't spawn before dots are applied, hit him with ruin II until they do.

When the adds spawn, kill them fast with 2 or 3 hits from aether drain life or ruin II.

Target NPC and esuna away the diseases then heal him up over 50 percent.

repeat.

I only had to fight 2 waves of adds.
