im all for having visible set of gear that you want displayed, I dislike wearing something that has good stats but looks god awful.

Yep, and the ability to mix and match with help with giving your character your own personal flair. Especially for items where the only matching boots are 10 ranks below you. You can just get boots with good stats and cover them up with something that gives you some character!

Spiral Knights has something like this.

Basically all gear has two slots. One is the "Gear Slot" where you actually equip that item and get its stats/bonuses/etc.

Then there's a "fashion" slot where you can equip another piece of gear and get its look on your character. It isn't special "Fashion" gear though, just another piece of gear.
