I dislike fates because they are boring. You have to stare at the map for hours, run around for hours, and it's annoying when you run a long way to a fate and have it disappear right before you get there.

Bum Bum Bum....Fate Joined
YES!
Dun Dun Dun...Fate Completed
0 Exp Awarded. Rinse and repeat.

i had liked fate, until the trend to zerg it had appear... it make the game look stupide now.
people will move from fate to fate, and when no fate is around wait in pack near an etherite. it's stupid, they need to add more content for the leveling.
Personally I can't stand fates just due to the whole spam factor. For me it's not the length of time it take to achieve the levels but rather the amount of effort exerted that brings enjoyment. Though this is coming from someone who enjoyed leveling in ffxi before they ruined it with abyssea/gov.

Like.
But needs fixing.
- Drop variety. FATEs should have more item, currency, etc. drops with RNG% based on participation. Special Materials (ie Dodore Leather), and decent amounts of Algean Currency (tin, bronze, silver, gold, etc) would help introduce more gil into the market.
- Experience points. Should scale much more severely with rank, and there should be a cap on total experience given by mob. (overcrowded FATE = much less exp) **note that this may cause problems in the community with players getting angry for others joining.. so this might not be the best solution.
- Difficulty. Currently, the only FATE I've ever seen people consistently lose is the Chimera one in Northern Thanalan. I'd like FATEs to be as challenging as Dungeon Boss fights at least. (ie, invulnerable bosses when adds are around.. changing patterns in the fights, insti-kill AOEs that need to be avoided) - My guess is that we will see more of this when the Primal FATEs are introduced, but I'd like the current FATEs to get some upgrades as well.
- Seals. I like the fact that FATEs are the key vehicle for obtaining GC seals. I'd bump the seal drops up a bit to compensate for a nerf in experience points.

Fates are THE WORST designed public event system I've ever seen in a MMO, like they went out of their way to design the worst one imaginable.
agree they need some work. join a fate party, run to said fate when it pops. get gold (not hard to do in a fate group) run back to sanc...wait for another...fates pop pretty fast every couple of mins or so...this morning for example..in costa de sol...15mins fate grinding got me 1/2 of level from 29-30...
if you are running to fates when they pop and by the time you get there they are complete you are doing something wrong. either your slow or your running to fates that are WAY to far away.
I strongly dislike the fate zerging, however with a caveat. I actually like FATEs as a system specifically at very low levels when you're walking around farming some mobs, maybe working on your hunting log and a fate pops, it's really fun to stop what you're doing and see 3-4 random people do the same and you start working together as an impromptu group. That is fun to me and I think how they were supposed to be designed. However, since the rewards are so good, you get to a point where that's ALL people are doing in a mass stampede, which makes them a completely unfun grindfest.
I'm not exactly sure how it can be tweaked, but the system is good early on but fades as soon as it becomes the dominant way to level.

There is nothing more boring in this game than doing a FATE.
