Some of you seem to mistakenly think SE has to 'prove' something in order to terminate your account.
Tidbit of advice: They don't.
This is called unattended play, which is against T.O.S. Educate yourself.

I didn't mean that SE has to prove anything, I meant the players who reported him can't prove to the GMs that he was botting. So to avoid Reporting abuse, the GMs still have to check manually before banning
Nope, you may get on to the GMs flag list, but until they caught you red-handed, they can't really based soly on your forum posts...

Macros are an authorized means to play, as long as YOU are the one starting them every time. (Which they were, with a controller, as they watched TV.)2.1 Cheating and Botting. You may not create or use any unauthorized cheats, bots, automation software, hacks, mods or any other unauthorized software or hardware designed to modify the Game and gameplay. In addition, you may not take advantage of game system bugs and exploits during gameplay.
This rule is specifying he need to be the person inputting the commands, and he is.
He doesnt have to look at the screen, he just needs to be the one using in game options to control their character.
A macro being activated by you, mashing a button, while looking somewhere else, is you being there.
In FFXI there was clarification on this very subject, and GMs stated, you need to respond to GM tells, if they feel you may be using another source to input commands.
You're allowed to use macros, you're allowed to look away fromt he screen, AND you're allowed to ignore GM tells.
BUT you can NOT ignore GM tells, if they are under the impression you are not in control of your character.
PS EDIT: The GMs also said not responding to a tell isnt enough evidence to have a perma ban, but a temporary lock on the account, until you respond. (In most cases, the GM doesnt send tells, they have been seen teleporting players to new locations, to see how they interact with the environment.)
