Why do people prefer having another bard?

The simple fact is that Titan is a difficult fight for mage dps. The constant moving around makes it difficult enough to get any spells off let alone keep up a decent rotation. There are periods in the fight where you can be reduced to spamming scathe as BLM. The inherent squishiness of the class doesn't help either, a small mistake that can leave a mellee hurt but still standing will leave a mage having a lie down.
I tried this fight several times as BLM and found it nightmarish, I switched to MNK and it was like a completely different fight. I think if you asked people to list their top reasons for titan fails pretty much everyone would have mage death at the top of the list. Casting times kill.

Cast times sucks but that is not the reason why you are getting two bards. A good BLM is only slightly better than a mediocre Bard and most would work with the Bard just for the extra ballads.

That's weird. Another FC I do events with every once in a while were specifically looking for a BLM the other night for HM Titan.
