Ok, I think I've got it and it makes sense (although Bo Jackson did play MLB and NFL. Still, point made :-).

What determines the "main base class", the highest level? My wife and I both started as CNJ only so that we could play together and she needs 15 CNJ to make PLD and I need 30 CNJ to make WHM so it seemed to make sense. But she wants her "main base class" to be her tank (GLD). I don't know if this just a semantic issue or what. She is in Ul'dah and about to become GLD1. Should I head to Limsa and get ARC1, or stay CNJ 15 and level up with her in Ul'dah? I'm guessing it doesn't make a difference since we will apparently retain our overall class levels for main story and side quest purposes.

Thanks, folks, and sorry if I sound confused. I am. I love the depth of this game, but it's really a new model for me to wrap my head around.

Edit: I posted this before Kincade's response was up. So my wife's PLD class will start at whatever level her GLD is once she takes the PLD Job, the GLD is her main base class. Thanks, that makes sense.

Yes, but that really only matters for one thing: your EXP bonus. You get bonus EXP (for mobs, not quests) that's based on the difference between your current class and your highest class.

Yes, if she wants to be GLA/PLD, then that's what she should level. You don't need to "declare" a class as your main or anything like that.

Since your goal is to play with your wife, you should stay together. You can go grab the ARC ACN class in Limsa and then go meet your wife in Ul'dah. It's your choice whether you want to level your ARC ACN or your CNJ with her.

When in party together, you both get EXP for all of the kills you get, as long as you're close enough to each other. I suggest working on your Hunting Logs together (press H). They give quite a large amount of EXP for the effort, and with two people working together, you can kill higher level mobs.

Also, FATEs can give quite a lot of EXP. You can either level together with your ARC ACN, or "Level Sync" down with your CNJ - less EXP, but the heals can help you stay alive if you need it.

Basically, you'll level faster if you're together. You'll only have to break party for a few class quests (which you can grab every 5 levels - don't forget) and VERY few story quests. To answer an earlier question, story quests are denoted by the "flame" icon when you talk to quest givers. You can also open your quest journal (press J) to check.

Pretty much. Your level is the level of your currently equipped class.

Edit: Forgot one thing: You have to unlock your Hunting Log before you can do it. I think it's your level 5 (?) class quest. For the first 20 or so entries, all of the mobs are located close to your starting area (e.g. Thanalan for GLA, La Noscea for ACN). So it would make sense to grab ARC ACN, meet your wife, and then go back to do your ARC ACN5 quest later.

Great suggestions and info, everyone. Many thanks.

I just flew into Limsa as part of my airship Envoy quest, I'm going to pick up ARC here, then conclude the quest by flying (for free) into Ul'dah and join my wife there. We both completed Difficulty level 2 of our CNJ Hunting Logs, so we'll probably start working together in Ul'dah on other stuff.

Should we wait to do a dungeon until she has her GLD leveled up a bit, or do you think we can start right off now. She's L17 CNJ, about to get L1 GLD.

    Thanks again,

    ACN. Limsa has the arcanist, not archer ^^;
Made that mistake a few times until people pointed out the ARC abbreviation is already taken by archer.

For the first dungeon, healers and tanks get almost instant parties because many just go for the DD role, so if you both go as healers you will have to go separately. Going beyond level 17 makes no sense because you get synced to 17 anyway. Getting a character to 15 doesn't take that long, so if you want to queue together, just level GLA to 15 as well

Ah, ok. Maybe what I should do is level up my ARC to 15 while she is leveling up her GLD to 15.

Thanks for the tips. Gotta say, this game has an excellent (and rapidly responsive) community.
