Nowadays, no one wants to play a game from 2001, including me.
You realize XI launched in 2002 and Wow in 2004 right? We're not talking about the Grandpa of MMOs versus the little kids. They are far apart as the original launch and current launch of this game <.<

edit: Also, if you pay attention, the GC TELL you that they don't fight anymore because they need to be united against the Garlean Empire and the Primals. So the entire premise of this game is what keeps your dream from reality. It's just the complete opposite of what this game is.

You're in the fantasy land. Pvp is not going to be open world. If you could READ you should have noticed that aside from the current alpha testing ACTUAL pvp will be using UNIQUE skills that you don't have access to in the open world. They arent ACTUALLY rivals as someone mentioned, training exercises.

Since when has a higher risk of death not been used to make games difficult. I think people are confusing the time consuming, tedious combat from certain other games difficult. Time Sink≠Difficulty

Some of the most famous games in the world (Super Mario) involve risk of instant death. People are just so used to taking 8 shots to the head before dying that they don't seem to have a value of life. Especially when they think the Healer is just sitting around waiting to Swiftcast+Raise them

Combat is not 2 men fighting for 3 days straight to the death. Combat is one man getting that lucky first hit and it ending.
