I never understood this argument in music or art and i sure don't get it for video games either. Why do people seem to think that something has to be niche for it to be great and everything that is "mainstream" "sellout" is average?
Because to make it mainstream and try to grab every type of gamer, you need to compromise the content.

It's like when you compromise with another person. Neither get exactly what they want, but both walk away thinking that at least they got something.

EDIT: So neither think it's an awesome deal, but a good/decent one.
