In my opinion, phys level should increase very slowly (with more tangible benefits for having a higher phys level), while rank should increase at the pace it currently does.
You can't tell what a character's physical level is by examining them. You need to look them up on the Lodestone to see their physical level, in which case you can see if they have multiple 50s or not by a simple glance, so that is a moot point.
