There are also people who play a ton of MMOs at once or flit from one to another regularly and they just confuse their terms sometimes. I know I've done it. I play too many different MMOs. o_oOfc there will be legacy and other vet. players of Final Fantasy universe and they will be using FF terms, but as long as FF:ARR atract players from other MMO there still will be /whisper , GUILD and other stuff. Peoples are just lazy (including myself) and dont want learn terms over and over thats a fact.
to be honest, i didnt heard terms as "mez" or "pat" before but for me its ok i have no problem to ask others what means "mez" etc. Imho best "shortcut" for me is using "CC" (crowd control) so i dont neet rewrite each class specifics but that isnt isue at FF since sleep is only one "reliable" there.Except I can't understand when people tell me to use "mez" instead of "Sleep." I had also never heard the term "pat" before and was wondering what it even meant before someone mentioned it in a completely unrelated conversation. "los" was also a wierd one that I finally figured out. I've played TERA and FFXI before now.
Sometimes there are barriers in communication; it's up to those who use the foreign terms to adapt to the current game.
ATM game is still new so little understandings on comunity-language should be enought
btw just for fun : when i played SC2 it took me 2 days before I figured what they means with "cheesing"
FFXIV has players with different MMO backgrounds and terms.
I try to update my terminology if the new terminology is better. I prefer using generic and simple terms.
"DD" (for Damage Dealer) is common, but "DPS" is common, too.
"Threat" is more common than "enmity".
"guildleves", "levequests", and "guildhests" are awkward.
"guild" is more generic than "Free Companies", but "FC" is short.
"CC" (for "Crowd Control") is more common than "mez" and more generic than "Sleep".
"Linkshells" are unique chat channels, but the name is too specific to use outside of FF.
I don't think FFXIV has alternate terms for "los" (using Line of Sight against an enemy), "pat" (patrolling enemy), and some other MMO terms.
It's fine for games to have unique terminology when they have unique features, but people won't use those names in other games if they aren't generic and simple.
FFXIV has many awkward terms that are only going to be used in this game.
In Final Fantasy XI and some others that are older it was always the proper term DD (Damage Dealer)>
DPS was only used to specify gear attributes and damage per second totals.
It started to be incorrectly used by younger gamers who didn't understand terms correctly and changed from there, a large amount in WOW.
Yoshi calls them DPS
My friends call them DPS, DD, melee, ranged
I call them Spankers
I don't care what others call them as long as we're all communicating effectively, there's no reason to ♥
I bet you also think people should be required to learn English to live in the United States, huh?Your English is very good compared to some English speakers.
You are correct though DPS is a measure of what a Damage Dealer does not what the job is. I can only guess this comes from WoW and other english MMOs.
Many have chosen to interject other game terms that have no place in Final Fantasy.
Other things of concern in relation to Final Fantasy XIV: ARR as an MMO.
1. We have /tells not whispers.
2. We have Linkshells and in ARR Free Companies not guilds.
3a. We have DoT (Damage over Time) spells and Enfeebles
3b. We have Sleep and Repose not mezs'.
Thank You so much for bringing this to the attention of the community.
@OP: Just a little something extra to take with you, sometimes people will refer to DPS as "deeps."

If im not wrong WoW spawned the DPS name. And im still arguing with my RL friends (they play wow). And talk can you come DPS? I shoot in, no you can not come as damage per second, but you can come as a Damage dealer.. (DD)
But words and phrases grow like time grows. Im using DD, and lol ppl using DPS. since a DD does DPS.Words are fun !
i perfer calling the healing role as a Medic, i hate it when people just call them "Heals"
its like the human language is getting butchered more and more by the year. i call the Tanking role a "Defender"
but since my terms are too "roleplayish" i get slamed by players for not sounding meta.
MMO terms:
Character, Avatar, Toon, Char
Roll, Reroll, Create, Start
Enmity, Threat, Aggro, Hate
Dps, DD, Damage
Tank, Guard (generally used in mmos where the tank class has 'Guard' in title), meatshield
Tell, whisper, pm
Sleep, stun, CC, mez
Raise, res/rez
Each line is synonymous with itself, I'm sure there are more. The sooner people stop being sensitive about inconsequential subjects like semantics the sooner we can move on from at least some of the petty bickering. Please act like an adult and understand that people don't have to conform to your preferential name.
Some of the folks in here might benefit from this video:

It's a section of one of Stephen Fry's talks, specifically on the use of language.
Remember: No one likes a pedant, folks.
