Personally I don't really care anymore. The login issues have not been a problem for me since the last patch more or less and that was the only reason I did it. I don't care if someone else can't play because of it that is SE's problem to deal with. It seems they have fixed that to a large extent and so the AFK logout feature is fine with me.

    See,

I don't really mind the auto-kick. I haven't had issues logging back in since the maint they did last Wednesday.

BUT. I think half an hour is too short of a timer, if you ask me.

i kinda think it should be longer than 30mins, like an hour. Last night before maintenance I was on DF with my roommate for party, and it took over 40mins (lucky there's a timer there and its odd it was taking so long). While he was crafting while waiting, I was doing laundry and other house chores. I can't do anything else too, because I want to stay in a sanction area just so if I get kicked inside a dungeon when its time for maintenance, I will still end up in an area where I can save bonus exp. Also the bonus exp on me, I don't want to spent it on crafting...

so imo, it can be a bit longer.

What's so difficult about walking over to your computer every 20-25 minutes and pushing the spacebar one time?

There's no good reason to complain about this fix. The only reason people are complaining is because they don't want to have to log back in after being afk for several hours while sleeping/at work/at school/etc.

If it were an hour, people would complain about it being an hour (too short). If it were two hours, people would complain about it being two hours. It's simple: the industry standard is 30 minutes. If it takes you more than 30 minutes to go poop, you're doing it wrong and should go see a doctor, not play FFXIV.

I was "abusing" the AFK system also, though I certainly don't think of it as abusing.
Since logging in during nonpeak hours and staying logged in was literally the ONLY way I could play a game I paid for, that's what I did.
Since last week's maintenance, I have stopped doing that because my server has (at worst) had a queue ever since then, and there's no reason for me to stay logged in if I am feasibly able to get in on my own.
Square Enix's decision not to have an AFK timer at the start was not my fault, I was just doing what I had to in order to enjoy the game.
Still, I'm quite happy that they implemented an AFK timer because that makes my life easier in the long run, I just don't think the people who did AFK in order to play the game in the first few weeks should be viewed as some sort of criminal.

Can you craft while AFK? Or can you do I don't know different things like getting xp or so? IO wonder

you don't understand. anyone who doesn't play the game exactly the same way these control-freaks do is abusing the game.

I agree with you. They shouldn't. But you also have a lot of the same people who did afk like you did, but they're coming here and complaining. They complain that a concept widely spread within games spanning almost every online gaming genre kicks afk players. I've afked a few times in order to maximize my game time. It sucks it's being implemented a little late but who knows what the future will hold.

Maybe the game will do another overhaul and more players will join, then an already implemented AFK system would do wonders. This is a reactive fix that could very well lead to being proactive in keeping the servers accessible for the foreseeable future. Why people complain about it I don't understand.

If this is your first game, realize that there's going to be AFK timers in most of your subsequent games after this. If this isn't your first game and you've never encountered an AFK timer, I have no idea what free to play bullshit you were playing. If you've played games with an AFK time and are complaining about this one? That's just dumb. That's like complaining about line lengths when you go to an amusement park.

I shouldn't have to worry about how long it has been since I've done an action in game. There are countless situations where this log out feature could come in to play when a person doesn't want it to. Why can't I just relax and play at my own pace? The people who are upset about the log out timer just want the convenience to be able to get away from the game without being punished for it, because that is how it feels.

This feature adds nothing other than stress to the player. Something Yoshida says he doesn't want to do. The only reason it exists now is because people complained back when they couldn't get a spot in the server. Not having an afk kicker wasn't the reason you have lag or can't log in. It was the teams failure to predict how many players were going to play their game and create enough servers for launch to go smoothly. And just launch at that, the log-in queues are nearly completely gone and numbers of players will only drop after launch.

If you don't do anything at all for a half an hour you aren't 'playing at your own pace'.

    You're 'not playing'.
