Hmmmm I'd say FFVI (North America FFIII) is a clear favourite. The story, the music, the characters, the flow of the game was amazing. From the intro with Terra's Theme and the Magitek walk (which I recreated the moment I got my Magitek mount I might add!), the Phantom Train, Esper Village, Zoso, Opera, and all the way to Kefka's Tower. One of the best, if not the best, game in my collection. Second would be a toss of FFIV (North America FFII) and FF Tactics. With FFVII taking a close third.

Great thread OP, good romp down memory land.

Absolutely. I keep hoping to see that grand tale retold in a more modern format. I think that many of the new fans that the Final Fantasy series has acquired since Part 6 came out on the SNES 20 years ago would appreciate the stories within stories of these older characters if they were able to see them translated into a more familiar game medium. And plus, I just want to see what that interpretation of Setzer, Shadow, Locke, the Figaro Brothers, Celes, Terra, and of course Kefka would look like.

And not in some mishmash fighting game.

I thought what I'd do was, I'd pretend I was one of those deaf-mutes.

My Fav is FFVI. The story, the music, the characters, the graphics (at the time it came out in the USA anyway), the fact that the main characters were girls Terra for the first half and Celes for the second (a big deal for a teenaged girl sick of every single game/movie/book/story/etc being about the guy saving the weak and helpless damsel in distress with the power of testosterone) all come together to make my favorite video game of all time. It still holds up today, even if the translations is a little dumbed down to get past the US censors. It was the first video game I ever played that was more about the story and the characters than about playing the game, and I still listen to the soundtrack often.

for me 6 was also my favorite for a long time, but storywise i'd have to say it's a tie between 8 and 9, i'm a sucker for a love story XD

Hands down Final Fantasy 6. The part that stood out the most for me was how the characters had their own unique combat mechanics. It blew my mind back then and is still impressive today. Tools, dances, martial arts combos, magic, beast forms. There was just so much care and thought put in each character that it stuck with me my entire life. <3

    X.
Blitzball, Yuna, the Summons (that scene where Valefor saves Yuna is seriously great!), Wakka, the love story...I loved it all. Loved the story of Kihmari, too, and it was great having a character like Auron around.

But VI is a very very very very very very close 2nd. The Opera House still makes me cry.
