Just wanted to Point out: They did actually fix FFXI SMN >_> you've been able to raise the avatars lvl to 113 now, making them guite good and on par with other DD, also at higher lvls you don't have issues with mp >_> but that is a bit offtopic

Like others have said....I'm just glad SMN is not a healer class like in XI.....THAT would have made me not play SMN at all. We can all agree that although it is not exactly what we perceive SMN to be, it is still pretty strong in the DPS department
I'm so disappointed that they turned SMN into a disease/virus/curse throwing mage with a lava-lamp as a Sidekick =(
The thing is, SMN could've been like FFXI or FFX or FFXII or ANY FINAL FANTASY game. Instead, it's like none of them, at all. All the people looking forward to SMN wanted to play SMN because of those concepts, and yet it matched none of them. It could've been as good DPS as it is now but just been a different gameplay style; a gameplay style that actually matches the Final Fantasy incarnation of the job. This whole DoT thing has absolutely nothing to do with SMN.
The thing is, this was forced and not needed. In order fulfill the need for another caster DPS, and the role of a DoT caster, they decided to add one. However, they knew everyone also wanted Summoner, so they decided to merge the two ideas together and form what is called "Summoner" in this game. However, by doing so, they failed all previous fans of Summoner, because the gameplay style SE foced into it does not match the Summoner everyone wants and desires. In the end, we got some weird hybrid, leaning far too heavily on the DoT focus and very little on the Summoner focus, resulting in the name of "Summoner" being nothing more than a tease/disappointing attempt to please and pull in fans that wanted the job to be added.

Its funny because i hear the same argument in the blm thread how becoming a bom does not add a thing etc. What is se thinking? Are all jobs this uninspiring?
No black mage IS good it plays like a black mage but our job spells are kinda meh. The only useful ones are manawall and flare. The rest are REALLY situational they would not get much use.
I never said blm was bad, i said uninspiring as in does not change much from thm. Which seems to be the whole issue also with smn, i for one wanted to main smn like in ffxi til i saw the egis. Now my hope is for a possible drk.
So, I have only leveled ACN to about 20, but I fully agree with what is being said. I was sad to find out that the Ifrit minions I saw people running around with were not on sale in some store, but were actually supposed to be the end goal of my second class progression.
It would be easy enough to fix this though. First, patch the summons that are out nowso that they have differing abilities. Make them conditionally useful and encourage the summoner to switch them in battle. Along with this you could add in the area affect to damage enemies or buff allies upon initial summon. If this is too powerful, some small tweak could be made to offset, but I think that it would work fine.
