You just need to look harder for what will make you money. I'm still making a ton by gathering and crafting. It's not as easy as putting just anything up there. You need to figure out what the market board is lacking and watch trends.

Yoshi has stated quite a few times that housing and PVP will change everything for crafters and gatherers, and thus the economy.
2.1,
2 months away.
Please look forward to it. Lolz
I know if people gathered the stuff I was looking for half the time, I would buy it. Maybe some of the things you can get at mid-level gathering nodes could potentially make you more? I guess try scanning the market and see what is needed.
Being server first 50 miner on Cactuar server I made quite a lot of money since I was the only one being able to supply the whole server with rare mats and even the HQ. Selling darksteel ore at 12k, gold sand at 9k, gold ore at 3k, grade 3 matter at 4k, etc.
I used to make about 1 million each day, maybe a bit less but now I barely make 150k a day. The market is pretty dead for now, maybe housing will change that who knows
The problem is that more people than ever are leveling gathering professions and there aren't enough crafters to keep up. People constantly undercut each other and so prices hit rock bottom. As an example, over the weekend, on Saturday morning, I sold a couple stacks of Bomb Ash for 90g each (not per stack). Just later that afternoon, it had already dropped to 20g each.

a) people that didn't level DoL primarily are running out of Gil. Repairs are expensive and once your 200k from questing runs out you are left with not much to spend.
b) people realized that the only use of crafters is for the Relic Weapon quest, since the best gear comes from dungeons / raids, and it can't have materia bound to it, which completely obviates the need to level any crafting classes.
If SE would allow limited materia binding to dungeon / raid gear leveling crafting would be in higher demand, and crafted gear would be in higher demand in order to convert to materia. But right now the only things that can have materia are the Darksteel level gear, but those are generally worse than Darklight (unless you HQ) and require far more tomestones to get the mats in order to craft them, in addition to the thousands upon thousands of gil for the mats to make them.
They did a poor job balancing the endgame equipment, and the pain DoL is feeling is a direct result of that, IMO.
the issue I have now (lv 31 botanist - not many Leves left) is that no matter what I gather, the profit gained by selling it to AH will be minimal(but at least I won`t lose money). I will end up just picking stuff up just to level the prof, but it feels so empty...
wait, there are people actually selling mats you gathered?? There isn't enough economy on my server for most of them to be over 1 gil, the expensive ones being 5-10 gil maybe. I hate how long it takes to research just one item and then go through the menus of the retainer to finally post the item. Just not worth it to me, I vendor almost everything I gather if I don't use it on my crafters. Then I still vendor whatever I made on my crafter. Not enough space to sell a bunch of worthless junk and it just takes so much time to post it all to make 100 gil here or there.
I DO make money selling drops from dungeons, though.
I have noticed an alarming number of very purposeful price tanking. An Item I would sell, cheaply, for 800 one day is being sold by 1 individual or a few for 50 gil, far below the cost to create at times. I feel like a lot of people are playing games with the Market, especially those who don't care / plan on checking out after the free period ends. I hope things level off, so I am storing most items or selling cheap myself, but I went from making thousands a day to a few hundred or not selling.
And no, I am not one of the super high priced people unless I screw up. I generally ask = or slightly above the lowest, recent, repeated purchase price.
I do worry how they will address this economy though. Staying hopeful, but worried none the less.
