Also keeping in mind the poor balance of the "Summoner" job; even if the concept is wrong, the job itself offers little. This is what a summoner is http://finalfantasy.wikia.com/wiki/Summoner not what we have is nothing like what we should be.
bumping this
I don't really care how it is called, I just know I can solo easily things other jobs have trouble dealing with.
I don't want my "Challenge everything, solo anything" job to be changed so people can have the FFXI SMN (no thanks).
This thread is literally a waste of time, they are not changing SMN and most people are okay with its current play style unless of course ppl think the opinion of those on the forums make up the whole community.
It's not a waste of time to discuss a topic, nor to make suggestions in hope of improvement.
You didn't read the opening post, or any of the thread.I don't want my "Challenge everything, solo anything" job to be changed so people can have the FFXI SMN (no thanks).
I did. You said that SMN is too much like Arcanist. I agree. So as Dragoon and Lancer. Maybe Pugilist and Monk.
As I said, I don't care how it is called, I like the current SMN way of playing but if they give all the SMN abilities to Arcanist, you can ask SMN to be changed to whatever you want for all I care. Even the FFXI one or a Black Mage wannabe with the pretty Avatar cutscene.
It's not just a matter of playstyle, it's a matter of balance too. It's disappointing that SMN can even be considered an arguable downgrade compared to ACN, but as it stands, that's how it is.As I said, I don't care how it is called, I like the current SMN way of playing but if they give all the SMN abilities to Arcanist, you can ask SMN to be changed to whatever you want for all I care. Furthermore, I'm not offering any specific gameplay styles I want it to mimic (FFXI for example); however, regardless, it matches NONE of the past Final Fantasy summoner playstyles and concepts in any way. The only similarity is the shape and name of the pet next to you. It's Square Enix trying to appease fans that want Summoner but also trying to fill a caster DPS role slot gameplay style (they wanted a DoT caster). Ultimately, they tried to mash the two together to kill two birds with one stone, but it just doesn't fit, and just results in disappointed fans of the job.
This gameplay style is enjoyable, but it should not be called "Summoner", because it's not.

You're letting your nostalgia blind you. With the exception of FFX, summons have always been one-shot abilities. Problem is, you can't do that in an MMORPG without massively devaluing the summons themselves (not to mention soloing would be pretty damn hard if your combat time was spent doing one-shot summons with long cast times).Even though I am not a fan of WoW, it's certainly polished and was a good choice to draw inspiration from. However, mimicking WoW classes instead of keeping with the wonderful iconic theme of the FF universe is sad. They have pretty much ruined SMN. Don't get me wrong, the class functions as a class, what they have ruined is what SMN is at its' core, a summoning class that relies on the raw power of its' summons.
That aside, the lore doesn't support it. Arcanist was obviously designed with the pet complimenting the class' focus on DoTs. Your alternative you have been half of your abilities being blank and entirely determined by what summon you had, and the eggi's (as well as carbuncle) being more like minions on /follow. Lastly, XI's summoner was far from what I consider good on any level; a job that ended up becoming only useful once every 57 minutes (Astral Flow => Summon Alxeander => Use Perfect Defense) is not worthy of prase by any stretch of the imagination.
* The sad thing is that FFXIV turned RDM into a turret, and people think that's what it's supposed to be. It's supposed to combine sword and magic into something more, not spend the bulk of gameplay spamming spells and jump into melee for only 3 GCDs before scurrying back to the back line like good little casters.
* Design ideas:
Red Mage - COMPLETE (https://tinyurl.com/y6tsbnjh), Chemist - Second Pass (https://tinyurl.com/ssuog88), Thief - First Pass (https://tinyurl.com/vdjpkoa), Rune Fencer - First Pass (https://tinyurl.com/y3fomdp2)
FFXWith the exception of FFX, summons have always been one-shot abilities.
FFXI
FFXII
FFXIII
But that's beside the point.
