Have to point out that that's not true. Due to the fact that shards use to drop when you breathed or sneezed in 1.0, the surplus I have is massive. 45k at least (per element). And since legacy servers already have gathering classes leveled AND jobs that can kill fast and blow through quests faster, we should have about the same rate gain of crystal/shards than new servers, but with a gigantic surplus behind us.

Food isn't worth buying or making at the moment. 12 shards per item? That's nearly 1200 shards for a full stack! THAT'S CRAZY. I haven't touched (my 50) CUL since 2.0 started because it's not worth burning my gil. I'm no 1.0 millionaire, and my money is precious to me.

high quality crits should just stay through death. everyone would want them, but cheap folks would still buy the normal versions for normal questing or 'easy' dungeons.

at least that's what's happening in for example SW:TOR where they have that system (well, similar, anyway. the high quality 'stims' are a different recipe that needs high quality items to even make it, but people still buy the normal version of the stims when they don't plan on dying a lot :P)

    Need shard making

What we really need is a restoration of the alchemy recipes for making 16 shards out of a crystal. That should go a long why towards fixing any shard shortages. Putting clusters back in and restoring the recipes for making crystals out of clusters would help too. One cluster = 256 shards, if they use the yields from the old basic recipes. That would fix shard shortages pretty well, I think.

I like this idea, something definitely needs to be done to make cooking more appealing. I think either cheaper recipes (that spit out more per craft) or some sort of boost to the food buffs themselves needs to happen. Cooking was by no means cheap in FFXI either, yet food became a necessity due to how substantial the buffs were. Right now the buff doesn't really justify the cost.

Only two things need to happen to re-balance this out quick and easy like.

First: Keep the loss on death for food as it gives value to the food people use and thus cooks can actually make some form of money. The only change would be to reduce the crystal component costs of later level food synthesis. One synthesis shouldn't require 11 shards total. Make it something like 5 at most.

Second: Re-institute the recipes to make crystals from fish or break / form them into shards or clusters.

These simple changes will keep the value of foods at profitable ranges yet lower the costs to consumers as their crafting costs via crystal consumption will be less. The addition of the recipes to produce crystals will also drive the market for cooking to be more viable.

Not countering your argument, just pointing something out... a minor detail that probably has no real weight on this topic.
If equipment broke after 1 death, or lost 10% of its durability every 6 minutes regardless of what you were doing this would be a relevant comparison.

The problem I see with some dishes I used to make in 1.0 that now instead of costing shards or crystals cost clusters, and as rare as those were in 1.0 they suck to get now because they're spawn time only. I don't want to have to spend my time switching between btn and min in mor dhona just to get some clusters. The recipes should be amended to use crystals and shards. In 1.0 we used to be able to convert fish into shards, crystals, etc but they took that use for fish away.
The cluster star food might be nice sure but the cluster cost makes it too much.

I could swear I had posted in here... I definitely agree there are problems with cooking as you get into higher levels. (This is not my main character, I just can't post with my main character set as main...)

I'd personally be rather satisfied just by each synth producing more than one serving at the same shard/crystal/cluster cost; even if this came with a requirement for more materials. If you need, say, 5 servings per person to cover possible deaths and the duration in a single run of certain content, times 8 people... the time (including gathering) investment that goes into keeping your entire group fed with the best food possible on raid nights is pretty ridiculous for something that has to be gone through every single week.
