Tanking in this game takes real work, with no forced taunt and no threat leeches, but it's all the more fun because of it. At my level, I find marking mobs, pulling with a shield toss, running in and flashing, and all is pretty much good to go as I then start a single target aggro rotation and flashing again for good measure. All this takes just a few seconds. Except for a few oddballs from the Duty Finder most dps I've run with are pretty good at giving me that time. Of course, that's just for your standard 2-4 trash mob groups. Dealing with adds and special mechanics often requires fancy footwork and improvisation.

And oh yes, always trying to switch to the next mob in the list before the first mob is dead so that when dps switches targets you already have a strong aggro head of steam and they can continue hitting all out, which I like because the faster the mobs die the less time they're around to pound on me.

Agree with the OP, as a WHM if the DPS keep doing such a thing, i just let them die until they have understood they're not a Tank.
It sometimes takes 2 or 3 times before they get it. I don't care if they rage at me in the process, learn your place and everything should be fine, Tank and Healer always run the group not the DPS.

My priority is ( in order ):
    1. To keep the Tank alive.
    2. To keep myself alive so i can obviously keep the Tank alive.
    3. DPS, when they are legitimately needing heals.
    4. Pets, if i want to. Even tho it should be the SMN/ACN/SCH responsibility to take care of this.

My job is not to keep some impatient DPS who think they can Tank, alive.

Sometimes it's not the DPS at all. E.g.
    *Tanks attack Ifrit*
*Spends 10 seconds waiting for them to get to a stable position to put down flaming arrow*
    *Fires DoT*
    *Ifrit sprints towards me*
    Tank: OMG LRN2 AGGROZ

II do my best to grab main shift halone to secondary to hold them back to main, toss in a flash and usually it is good to go. Then you get the clueless that shift to what ever you are not focused on to try to be a bad ass, and my motto is "Oh sorry you want to tank? OK go ahead.."

Tank is going to do his best to keep the party alive, but primarily the healer first. IF the DPS cause an influx and it shifts to the healer. Ill drop back cover the healer first.

To the above person, it is hard to take someone who majored in ebonics seriously. You do realize which abilities cause that type of agro and why? Why you begin a base line attack before the builds? That some bosses actually pick targets based on multiple aspects?
    Pardon?

And for you... I quoted both the boss and the moves I used. DoTs don't generate aggro aside from the initial hit, of which one of my moves didn't have. I think you're just being a fool right now.

As a DPS I try my best to manage my aggro while dealing optimum damage. If I see that I go to 2nd place on the hate meter from nothing, then I'll stop right away until the tank gets complete control of it.
Same goes to bosses when I'm almost close to catching hate.

pop fight or flight before your shield lob.

or if you're a manly man - unchained + berserk before your tomahawk

    seriously

the enmity lead early on is a big deal, easier to get in the habit if you start early

Tank marking target helps obviously...but it is not compulsory. It's not hard to see which target the tank is hitting, or which target is being CC-ed.

Keeping enmity on a single mob is simple. Halone combo and flashes does the job.

Multiple mobs is a different story. I normally Savage blade one > Halone the next and voke the third. (obviously weaving flashes between)

The problem is when there's 3-4 mobs and the healer starts going batshit insane before I've managed to get threat on all of the mobs. You don't need to cast cure on me when I've lost less than 2% of my HP, I'll be ok. >.>

I'm always watching the enmity meter but sometimes it'll jump from yellow to red. At orange, I pretty much stop attacking (aside from auto). Sometimes even auto attack will pull enmity ahead of the tank. -_-
