I see you never played FFXI or FFX? Those had Summoner classes in them and yes they are pet classes.

Sans a few Final Fantasy games, mainly those after Final Fantasy 10 (not the majority of Final Fantasy games) The previous 7 games (1 and 2 did not have summoner) and even the Final Fantasy Tactic games, the summoner acquired the summon by defeating it and then they were able to use a "Summon Spell" to call them forth to use their unique attack... Ifrit = Hell Fire (or variation), Shiva (Diamond Dust) or variation, etc. However, the summons did not STAY in battle.

X XI XII XIII and soon XV the summons stay with you. I still rather have a pet that comes and do dmg and leaves over a summoner that uses DoT.

Welcome to the boring version of warlock, it's too bad it's not really an exciting dot/pet job but it does do large amounts of dmg which I can't complain about.

You enjoy Arcanist; not summoner. Summoner is not a gameplay style in any way in this game.
