Haha yeah I love the design of some of them - although actually after reading some descriptions of the empire, and noticing their tendency to attach guns to ALL the things, I actually wonder if it's a not-so-subtle satire on America. I haven't played too far into the plot but I'm gonna go ahead and guess they're making some kind of ultimate weapon by messing with forces beyond their control?

Anyway, I guess you could play some kind of rebel faction who left the Garlean army - kinda like Balthier in XII who used to be a judge but then decided being a badass was a better career move.

also to be honest it would make the PvP 100% more interesting since we are getting new set of skills (and it would make sense in the context of things)

Being an SE game. And the second MMO and... (Take 2 of the last one that took most influences from other MMOs) and did the one thing I like. No factional griping.

Look to Horde loving WoW. Their story continues on and on, the Horde (the atm very evil side instead of just a shade of gray) has had the Alliance players crying for why the Alliance always loses in the story. We don't need this. Sure if the story ends with the good side winning that would be cool, but to endure 10 years of losing to one faction or the other because ... Players. Then no. Take this sorry thing away and burn it the fires of the hottest sun.

Besides after that one cutscene after Titan, the Empire is gosh darn lucky I don't have a (Wipe city off face of planet) ability. I'd make a burning path from Ala Mhigo all the way to the capital leaving nothing but destruction in my wake. I'm more surprised the three City States don't just petition the Beast Tribes and their summoned Primals to deter the Empire's desire. Or at least find Bahamut and ask provoke him in that direction. XD

You need no silly faction to have gunblades. You simply need a few sympathetic anti-garleans who have the way with magitech stuff and give such things to us. XD

If you pay attention to the story, the other Eorzeans who are part of the empire did not "choose" to be there (some perhaps did but the majority did not.) They are from occupied city states or those that have been overrun such as Ala Mihgo and are basically forced into serving under threat of harm, most likely to their family. When the empire takes over a city state they obliterate the culture, forcing their own upon the people, and those who do not escape are forced into service. Also, the empire already has summoned a primal, which caused the entire world to change.
