What kind of malarkey is this?

For the past few days I have seen a few PCs popping up afk on top of this ledge in Ul'dah. Anyone want to fill me in with the secrets to make this possible?

Either you're losing packets or they're abusing faulty terrain checks/pos hacking, which is most likely.

They are either teleporting (exploit) or its a positioning glitch because your clients not showing their actual position because its already invaded by another player (which it looks like it might be, his normal position might be at the foot of that tower but because his friends sitting right on top of him when the game trys to render it for you it just dumps him in the closest empty spot.

I have to thank Square-Enix for the amazing job they have done recreating Final Fantasy XIV from Scratch. Especially the inclusion of Missing Genders which we petitioned for in good faith. This was proof to us players that the Developers are truly Sympathetic to our requests and that being honest and vocal can pay off with the amazing characters we have who are Female Roegadyn, Male Miqote, and Female Highlanders. Thank You SE, Thank You Community Team, Thank You Yoshi-P.

If you do /dance emote directly below that position followed by /laugh followed by /doze it teleports you up there. But you may have to try a few times.

I seen this a bunch of times, I figured it was just like when someone lags through objects or walls, to him hes infront of the wall but to you hes on top of the wall.

    It happens a lot.

If anybody remembers the boundary oddity that let you hop onto the Airship's sides or into Valkurm's water on FFXI, it's the same exact concept. You just need to run into a certain spot at a certain angle and you'll pop right up.
No hacks involved whatsoever. I'll leave the "where" bit up for you to discover.

That was my hunch and multiple people from my linkshell have been running at every possible corner but none of us have been able to get up. Oh well, I guess I will keep trying.
