Could someone help me in regards to armour? I did a load of quests and got this slim plate like armour, however since then every "upgrade" has less actual armour, but a bit more stat wise, am I meant to sacrifice the armour for improved stats?

I had the same issue. There are some really weird armors that quests give. Some 'Plate' armor are usable by us, some aren't. I end up having a really high armored piece with lower stats and being rewarded a lower armored piece with better stats later on, I choose the stats. In my mind, I'm a DPS anyway and I'm not supposed to be getting hit - which is what you should be aiming for anyway.
