This man has it spot-on.I've been trying to log in for near enough 2 hours now, if I finally do manage to log in there is no way on Earth that I'm logging back out again. It's not my fault that SE are suffering from gross incompetence and so I'm not going to suffer the hours of trying to log in again tomorrow when I can just remain logged in.
If you *really* want to fix the 1017 errors email philrogers@square-enix.com expressing your disgust at this debacle of a launch (he's the CEO for SE NA/EU), I'm sure if he suddenly gets thousands of emails from irate customers annoyed that the FFXIV team couldn't organise a pissup in a brewery he'll hopefully step in and kick some arse. Obviously he himself won't read the emails but the people that do would notify him that the XIV team are incompetent.
/edit @ below....
A person who would have, I don't know, looked at the figures and had the hardware ready to roll come live?
How many 1.0 players played P3 and P4 (odds of going into live, very high)
How many players pre-ordered the game (odds of going into live, very high)
SE should have had a rough estimate of how many people would be playing 2.0 from Early Access to Live and you can be damn sure the figures are way higher than what they accounted for when their pathetically short P4 ended, the only word for a company which knows how many people should be playing and doesn't have the hardware present to cope with the demand is incompetent. The whole "we didn't expect this demand" is total and utter rubbish, they had the figures in front of them, if P4 had been longer they would have had the time to bring in more hardware so that the launch wouldn't be this screwed up with thousands of players unable to log in and their only answer being, again, total incompetence.
Why for instance does the game client have to sort out between the two data centres in Japan and Canada? That puts undue stress on both log in servers as you have to poll both the JP and NA/EU servers for a list of worlds, if on the launcher you could manually select the region you wanted to play you wouldn't have the NA/EU players hammering the JP world server list with no intention to go there and you wouldn't have the JP players hammering the NA/EU world server list without any intention of going there.
What kind of solution is putting you in a queue and then bringing up a message "The world is full, try again", I'm in the queue because it's full, that's the whole idea of a queue, you sit in it until you get to the front, not sit in it and then get thrown out of the queue. What kind of solution is "people are having trouble logging in, so what we'll do is make it harder for people to log in!". I said it's incompetence on SE's part because it is, no IT manager would build a system without redundancy to cope with unexpected demand and no IT manager would look at the figures and build a system unable to cope with expected demand, at least not if they wanted to keep their job.
Consciousness creates reality.
I don't understand why SE forgot to implement kicking off AFK users. I guess they don't have a way to automatically detect bot either. I really doubt the game can succeed in end game now. Forbidding AFK should be their first thing the do, expanding worlds being second. Think about it this way, 2000 people AFK on one world is 2/5 resources. Expanding worlds can only benefit new users who don't have a character. Existing ones must still wait to get in to the old world. Plus this situation will only get worse if not enforced. I've tried 6 hours today and couldn't get into my world. 6-hour is more than most of the time I could allocate to play the game. Now it's the long weekend so I can wait, but would I pay some game that I can only play 2 hours a week and waste 8 hours of my time?

To everyone who is getting 1017 in fear of logging off. Just leave your character in a Sanctuary and log off. Having your character AFK at an Aetheryte or Sanctuary can get the rested EXP bonus, but you can also get it when you are logged off, too! It makes NO SENSE to leave your character standing there doing nothing while you are away. It clutters the screen and can even put stress on both your own PC or PS3 with all of the characters on the screen. I've got lag every time when I go near a Sanctuary or Aetheryte because of all the AFK people. Just log off. You aren't missing anything in-game if you do!

I logged in this morning at 9am and played till my game error out at 10am. Now I have been trying to get back in to play for four hours. I would really like it if a fix happened today instead of having to wait till Wednesday JP time.

You want to know what's ironic. The people who want to avoid 1017 are the one's causing it in the first place. Come on, laugh with me here. LAUGH YOU SELFISH AFKERS!
I will remain logged in until I can confidently know I'll be able to get in when I want to.

not going to lie when me and my brother logged in we "thought" we will be kicked out for about 30 min or so but when we got back on we were still logged in shocked us yeah but we did not mean to do that now when we are not playing we do logged out so that anyone who is trying to log in can play
To put things in perspective. I started watching the first lord of the rings movie when I began trying to log in spamming "0" as fast as it would let me.
Those damn hobbits are half way to that stupid volcano, and like they're going to toss that shit in before I even manage to get past the log in server.
IF I ever get in I'm never going to leave unless I get kicked or disconnected.
