    If I may be so bold as to make such a sweeping generalization, I think this harkens back to ancient Greece (on which Eorzea is based). If the Twelve are the Olympians and the Primals are the Titans, these great creatures would be the giants and dragons. Notice that when Midgardsormr perished, he did not dissolve into aetheric mist - he is not concentrated aether (which is what all physically manifest "deities" in Eorzea seem to be).
