Why is everyone comparing SMN to BLM? They are 2 different job styles. BLM is built around MP management and huge burst. SMN is built around managing dot timers and pet actions. Yes we don't see the big numbers as most other jobs/classes, but the damage is there. Yes there needs to be a few things buffed, but over all I am happy with how the SMN is playing. If I wanted huge burst numbers I would have played Bard or BLM.

I guess we should try to refocus this thread back on the OP.

The summons are underwhelming in both looks and size.

Am I the only one that like the looks of the summons? :X
Can't talk about damage as I don't have a summoner yet, but as long as I'm enjoying the game I wouldn't mind being less dps than a BLM.

Why would you not mind being less DPS then a BLM when all of our damage is done over 18-30 sec dots. We have no burst, we should have some of the highest sustained damage.

EDIT: Crap you got me off topic again...

Summons are small and don't look good at all.

The thing is that I believe smn trade dps for more versability. Sure, there are things to be changed so that it gets balanced, but I believe it will never get as much dps as a BLM, and I agree with that.

See, this is what I was expecting when I chose to be a Summoner. Their sizes in that video seem about right to me.

My main problem isn't that I'm not summoning the Primals themselves. I'm even just okay on how the Egi's designed. What bothers me most is that they're TINY. The Ifrit-Egi (the only one I have and seen so far) is around the same size as my Carbuncle. When you first summon the Ifrit-Egi, it doesn't feel like an upgrade, it just feels kind of "meh." Hell, BECAUSE of what you had to fight in order to get it, it feels downright disappointing and uninspiring.

And to the people who are saying that even the size in the video is too large. I don't really agree, since they look to be only slightly larger than Roegadyn's, a playable race in the game. The summons only look larger than the race because they're also floating.

When SE released this concept art of the Summoner and Ifrit, I was pretty excited. Ifrit-egi's current design stayed pretty similar, and I agree with everyone else, the designs are ok (I dislike Titan's though..), but it's the size that's borderline insulting. I know it's just a concept picture, and things never turn out exactly like the concept. But still, they implied that a big beastly Ifrit-ghost would hover around you and I was looking forward to it. So I definitely wasn't expecting anything like XI's summons. But the summons now are hardly distinguishable from the dozens of minions running around >.<

Except that they glow..that kinda helps..

I was definitely hoping that it'd be something more like the concept art, something large and menacing, not a fancy toy!!

My 800+ Fester crits at 46 would beg to differ.

SMNs are fine single target, and actually a bit on the high side.

I have an idea for a rework of the class. I have not unlocked it yet but seeing the summons and hearing the complaints about damage it sounds like the "awesome" is just not there for the class. Summoner has always been flashy and big and that has just not translated to the 2 mmo's.

How about this as a redesign:

The Summoner is not only able to summon a pet like they can now but they also have big single attack summons. The numbered games have handled summons as an either/or when it comes to summoning. Example in X or XIII the summon was controlled on the battlefield, just like they are handled now in XIV, but they were far more grandiose. In VII and VIII they were single attack spectacular summons.

Take the egi primals and treat them just like the elemental spirits in XI, basically they are our field summons. We are not controlling Ifrit, we are just controlling his elemental essence. We have Carby and the egi primals, perhaps in the future we could get some more low level summons from previous games as field summons. I don't want them to go overboard as I think we will have some kind of Beastmaster class at some point but there are a couple like cactuar, tonberry and bomb that were summons in previous games. Would be a nice nod to the series. This part of the class would basically not change from what it is now with the Arcanist and Summoner unless balancing was needed because of the second type of summon as described next.

The new single target summon would not call out a summoned creature to stay on the field, it would call a summon to perform an ability and leave. You summon Shiva (or a fragment of Shiva's power) and she performs Diamond Dust and leaves. You summon Pheonix and it cast raise and leaves. These summons would be very long on the cast time and very long on the recast timer. When they are summoned to perform their ability your field summon is automatically dismissed. These would need to be used carefully as the recast time keeps them from being spammed.

The class would be a damage dealing / utility class. Damage dealing would come from either your field summons and our dot effects or from the big single ability summon. The utility would come from our single ability summons being able to summon a cure or a raise or a reflect or a debuff. We would not be as efficient as a white mage for instance but we would be able to summon a cure or a buff or a debuff in a pinch. Just like in the main number games casting cure is far more efficient but sometimes things would go south and you needed to cast a summon hit everyone with a cure or to clear silence etc...

This is the direction I would like to see the job go.

I agree with most people in this thread.

Summoner in this game is a joke, and a total slap in the face to every summoner in the final fantasy franchise.
