I think it's due to all the AOE that destroys the Scholars pet and is unavoidable. The first boss places a dot on the entire party and the party needs to consume a fruit to remove the dot. Obviously pets can't eat the fruit, so they die.

It's not impossible, but I can see how it would be frustrating.

(If I'm remembering the correct dungeon...)

You could just resummon the pet, in fact you can save Swiftcast just for such a situation. The recast on it is surprisingly short.
