I don't get it either. I feel I can safely upload a video of gameplay as long as I include the copyright information in the description. Seems reasonable to me. If I was adept enough to make money off of youtube, I wouldn't think one game's videos would be enough to break my bank.

Its amazing how many people have no idea how beneficial embracing services like youtube and twitch can be for a game. You have people like totalbiscuit, jesse cox, itsmejp, etc who have hundreds of thousands of subs that watch the content they put out. Having these people produce videos about your game is essentially free advertisement and a great way of building interest and hype about your product. There have been some games that have heavily benefited from endorsements by popular streamers and youtubers.

Its simply a missed opportunity on the part of SE in my opinion. Making the material usage terms so restrictive benefits them in no way and prevents them from tapping into a community that has demonstrated in the past that it can generate interest and sales for a particular game by producing videos about it.

If it's an indie game, sure, but an AAA game, not needed at all.

What right do you think you have to monetize content that someone else created? Just because you're commenting on it doesn't mean you deserve to profit from it.

And no, these paid YouTube personalities don't keep games afloat. They didn't save post-WotLK WoW, they didn't save TOR, they didn't save D3, they didn't do jack crap. Good games succeed, poor games fail.

All of the best content (WoW machinimas for example) was created when these videos really weren't monetized. If you're passionate about a game, then do your bit and share it with the rest of the world without expecting money from it.

Perhaps it may not be needed but it is also not detrimental to the title at all as well. You rarely see western big name developers crack down on the youtube and streaming community like some asian devs such as sega, nintendo, and now SE have. This is because they realize while the advertisment is not needed it is also no harmful.

This isnt about the game being a AAA title done by a big dev because there are plenty of AAA titles done by big devs that do not utilize this kind of restriction. This is an Asian dev thing. For whatever reason they want to shut out youtube even tho it offers no tangible benefit for them to do so.

I've posted this before but I'll post it here as well:

I think what people fail to understand is that there is more going on than Square just saying no. The rights to things like game music, voice actors voices, sound effects, even artwork, are owned by several entities other than just Square and I can guarantee you they want to make sure that their work is only being used in the context of the game as that's what they have given their permission for. Many of the creators of this additional content may fall back to Square as a licensee of their work to make sure that other people are not profitting from what they have worked for.

Basically, If I had created a piece of art for the game, licensed it to Square and then saw someone else profiting from it, I would 1.) Come after you to pay me royalties and then 2.) Go after Square for letting my work be used elsewhere without defending it.
