As a tank, I'd like to remind you there is a flipside to this coin as well.

I've had a number of duty finder parties, and it seems in almost ALL of them, I have to scramble to keep people alive, because EVERYONE is attacking a different target. If I switch to a target someone is on, they switch to another, and NO amount of Flash spam is going to keep up with a Black Mage throwing AoE nukes as fast as he can. When someone gets aggro, especially archers, their response is almost universally to backpedal as fast as they can, while still frantically firing at the mob. This ensures the mob is out of Flash range by the time it goes off. I've had group members run in to the boss, open with the Limit Break, and then ask me if I knew how to tank when they got hit... all before I even got in range to provoke it (Again, archer).

I'm not contesting there are awful tanks out there, but keep in mind, there is more than enough awful to go around in ALL categories.

To be honest, I'm actually hesitant on joining parties because I feel like I'll screw up and ruin everyone's experience.
But how can I get better if I don't practice, right?

Ah yes, I see it's time for the traditional "IT'S ALL THE TANKS FAULT!!!" thread. Up next, that old standby, the "WHY DIDN'T THE HEALER HEAL ME FROM THE 1 SHOT BOSS AOE I WAS STANDING IN!!!"

If a person hasn't dong'd their job right. If you run the same boss/area again, the best way to resolve this is not to hope they learn from their mistake, but to tell them what their mistake was and how they might resolve it.

HOWEVER, having said that, the natural epeen way to enjoy this game is to let everyone but you suck at their job, thereby helping you look good and providing you with insult fodder. Because how much more boring would the game be if everyone was good at it. I do think many people heartily enjoy criticizing other players when talking to their personal LS or FC. Seldom do I see these people say "but I told him/her this and now we are running smoothly". Usually they laugh and insult them untill an hour and many runs later nothing is accomplished. At that point the whine and cry. Rinse and repeat.

It's the first dungeon where everyone has to do their job.
Ofcourse tanks need to learn to keep aggro on them but I did that dungeon yesterday and there was no marking, no cc nothing. We died 2 times, first time on trash that was patrolling and we didnt fight on the right spot so got them agro us. Second time was on final boss when tank didnt move in time to avoid poison.

But I have to say like an other poster said I find the trash harder then the bossses, but that is probably mainly because we don't use crowdcontrol a lot. Which i don't get cause it is easy enough to sleep a target but that also require marking it right.

Gramul, you've been playing since beta 1.0, I think you've learned a few things that will make you a good party member. Are you fishing for a compliment or something?

My advice to anyone that thinks a tank is bad needs to play tank for a month or more before they cast judgement and if you have, then you know the basics (I hope) and know that you can't attack different mobs than the tank and expect him to keep hate with something he or she is not focusing on.

The best way to improve is to practise - if we make people feel bad when they mess up then they're more likely to quit than they are to try again. Inexperienced players and bad players aren't the same thing, and if we encourage the inexperienced ones to keep at it then there'll be more around to make Duty Finder group us all faster and instances go smoother.

*Forgets that all "hardcore" players were born in Darklight gear and have never had a bad day's MMO-ing in their lives*

I've been playing since beta 1.0 too, and I'm still very nervous in a party. Why? Because people who run them all day and all night keep telling me how "simple" and how "easy" it all is, and because mouthy self-appointed party leaders spends more time typing "...." and "Why didn't you heal meeeee?!?!?" than "This is where I'm going to be standing" or "It'll do this when it hits 50% health".
