I love this game, and respect the dev team, but Square Enix crossed a horrible line.

There was nothing wrong with what he said or how he said it, it seems you just don't like people with logical explanations that seem to go against your post. I'm not saying I agree or disagree, but it is SE's game and they can do as they like with the content.

If Square wants to give up millions of people learning of their products through youtubers with hundreds of thousands, if not millions of fans... well, then that's their own choice and their mistake (assuming their hand isn't being forced on this in some way).


It really shows just how much Japanese companies are out of touch with the rest of the world, and why they question the fact that they simple can't keep up with western sales and products. The same such restrictions came from Sega and Nintendo in the past, and both of those companies are desperate for that same attention and money now (and Square didn't do too hot last year, either). If you piss off people who have a cult like following you will have problems, especially if they essentially save you millions in advertising with their vast network. Let's have a look see at how these people banded together just to get Microsoft to change their plans. Luckily they weren't so arrogant to assume they were right about everything (in that they changed some things for the better through feedback).


Final Fantasy XIV A Realm Reborn has become what it has through feedback from audiences the world over in addition to the hard work of the team and the direction of Yoshi-P. The first was exactly as described above with their hubris and not embracing the community and it's thoughts and releasing the game how it was.


Personally I would've enjoyed watching some youtubers make a few videos, and then sending said videos to friends of mine who won't otherwise give this game the time of day. I'm a customer myself and plan to maintain my subscription, but this is just less potential members for them. No full scale word of mouth will be given when such a massive network taken out of the loop.

I watch many gamers broadcast their play via twichtv, justin.tv, youtube or whatever, I notice message slide or message crawler on the screen about "Donate". I think this is the point of SQ-EX.

If you think the community needs these videos to grow, then you sir are ignorant. NDA throughout the betas and SE still had to shut down sales to keep servers from melting. This community does not need the bottom feeders. My 2 gil.

Seems a lot of people don't understand how this works. YouTubers cover a game, review a game, give a look at a game, and they run ads over the video in order to get paid to some degree. The arguments are getting paid for other peoples work, and while that's actually NOT how it works, tell me, how would that be any different from a written review of something? What about people who review movies? Books? Things like that? There is zero difference. Don't get mad and say it isn't a job just because it's reviewing a game.

Viewpoints on the topic are skewed, even more so to someone outside looking in. Youtubers don't make the money from the game in the video, they make it from the ads run on the video, they get paid by basically selling their viewers to the ad companies. That's how it works. Many seem to think that youtubers make mad amounts of money off of this, that's also untrue.

How do you think indie games have been becoming so insanely popular? How they've really taken a massive stand and become relevant? Media exposure. Youtube, twitter, facebook, things like that. Reviewers and first lookers on youtube do a video and those indie devs aren't saying "Okay please review my game and get me some exposure but oh you can't monetize this." because they understand that it's a job, it is work, just because someone enjoys their work doesn't make it not work. Those devs approach reviewers to get exposure, because in the end that's what's really important in these videos.

SE is behind on the times. This media license is stupid. You could say "don't monetize then" but when you can't even change sounds around how are you supposed to make interesting content with it? Eh? And what youtuber that's worth his wallet would use up their time making a good video for a game that won't allow them to monetize? That's basically doing freebie work. How many of you would go to a total strangers home and set up their entire home theater, using up a day that you could be working making some cash, for nothing?

I don't understand why this is a big deal. You shouldn't be able to make money off their product and creative/intellectual property. You (blanket term usage) didn't make the game, after all.

I do agree that Squeenix is very behind the times, and as a youtuber who plans to LP this game I will admit it does affect me as well. However, regardless of not being able to monetize the video, I still plan to LP this game. I've been looking forward to sharing the story of my character to my subscribers for, like, forEVER. And so have my subs been looking forward to it. I'm going to LP this game because I really, really want to. And monetization be damned, I'm going to make it my grandest work. I didn't start doing this for the money. I'm glad I was liked enough to get partnered, but I'm still doing this because I want to.
