Obstacle, not a barrier.
If you're willing to start over and give Karnak a try, I know 2 LS who will take you in! One is really big & the other is somewhat new, so its small in size but super friendly. I have pearls to both so I could talk to their leaders ahead of time that way you wouldn't have to try to find them on your own ^^ (I would invite you to my main one but they have a Phys LvL requirement). Anyway, like I said earlier, it couldn't hurt to give it a try if you're not having a good experience where you're at.Heck, I've even asked around in towns for an active linkshell that talks, and get no replies.
I honestly dont think the game is terrible, and I enjoy it when I am in a party. The community is what is killing this game for me. I dont understand the lack of conversation in game..

it's hard to get an LS? Really? have you asked anyone to join theirs?

I'm on Mysidia and it's not that quiet on my server. On Mysidia you'll get shouts advertising Linkshells, I've mainly been seeing that in Japanese, and people trying to get people to join them for levelinking or guildleves at certain camps (I've been mainly seeing this in Japanese). I've hardly seen conversations though, atleast not in English. I've only been spoken to twice during my time in the game (as far as actual conversation goes), once by someone who asked if I can help with a behest (I was on my way out so I couldn't help unfortunately) and another by a player who wanted to join me on my guildleves at Camp Drybone so he can better level his Thaumaturge.
I remember reading that Mysidia was considered as one of the unoffical Japanese servers so that might be one of the reasons why I can't find many English speaking players to talk to, but the other is that most of the English speaking community on my server keeps to thier Linkshell. I'm at the point where I'll say random stuff just so I can get a reaction out of people; you know, to instigate a conversation. Anyway, if you see me on, feel free to say hi to me, I'd really appreciate some form of human contact.

As mentioned before, Besaid can be chatty but usually only in Ul'dah if at all. And usually it's the RPers doing their own thing.
It's hard to ask anyone when nobody wants to talk in the first place, the game is very very shell-clique orientated sadly. If you don't have one its a very unwelcoming and dire experience.it's hard to get an LS? Really? have you asked anyone to join theirs?
I'm also on Selbina and its pretty lively actually...

Very true and add in the fact almost NO-ONE even advertises their LS it's pretty sad... that's just how anti social everyone is on the game atm You shouldn't have to ask to join someone's shell... they should be recruiting and you should know it! But people in the game atm can't even speak up to do that, it's sickening to a point![]()
Akira.. I am on Wutai, and umm, you are not even close with your observations, you must be standing in a river in the black shroud or something. Wutai is actually really busy, don't know what FF14 you are playing....
Also have another character on Mysidia, you ever seen 80+ people trying to get in on a Behest, because I have. Mysidia is nuts, it has to be at the top of the list, population-wise. And there are always shouts and whatnot for leve groups.

I'm on Saronia which is one of the lowest population servers, but Ul'dah can be pretty chatty.
There are a lot of people in different LS's who are friends with each other, so the conversation often spills over into /say chat. It's maybe 60:40 Japanese to English.
I find the English speaking players to be more quiet in-game, maybe because a lot of people use voice chat servers within their LS's whereas Japanese people don't?
Also, it seems that a bunch of the English LS's require online applications. I haven't come across any Japanese LS's with those sorts of policies. They don't offer linkpearls as freely though, usually waiting until they get to know someone first.
