There's so many things to point out about the good and bad of the situation. Simple point is though, the biggest publicity that the game has is not people who make videos on youtube or streamers, it's the NAME. Final Fantasy... that alone has established itself as the biggest marketing tool the game can have. It doesn't matter if you played ANY FF game, there are significant odds that you've at least heard of the franchise. I have a friend who has next to no video game experience (Mario Bros on the Wii is probably the 2nd game she ever played), yet she has heard of the FF franchise.
Yeah, they could get additional publicity and "free" advertisement, but maybe they don't care to? If it's not about the money for you, as a video maker/streamer, why does it matter to you that they (SE) stand to lose free advertisement?
Totally agree. Also, depending on the scope of their 'monetization' definition, twitch is out, too. Support player content like this is one of the major factors that has kept WoW functioning as long as it has (and trust me, I loathe WoW and everything it stands for).
SE either needs to figure out their community management, or get a better translation team -- whatever the problem is they are in serious need of recombobulation on the NA/EU front. Their current activity betrays a terrifying ignorance of the western market, and despite any good intentions comes across as callous and bigoted.
I say this having lived in Japan and experienced the culture (and language, in case you were wondering). I am inclined to agree with the many thoughts on the forum that this is all due to miscommunication, but it's 2013 people. SE has put out one online game already, albeit they've not done the foreign data center thing until now, but you think they would have learned from the giants like Sony, Toyota, and others. It isn't as if this playbook hasn't already been written a hundred times since the Japanese boom '70s and '80s.
The fact that you said this, and that 44 liked it:

So they won't let you make money off their product... I fail to see why you can't understand that. Running streams or youtube video's for the sake of making advertising revenue is no different than posting/streaming a movie still in the theater without paying royalties for all to see and not expecting the content owners to come after you.
They decided they didn't want you making money off their product... deal with it.

OP, you should probably include Totalbiscuits new video in the OP to show people what the reality of the situation of this is. Here's a link to his video: (This is why I love Totalbiscuit)

I think what people fail to understand is that there is more going on than Square just saying no. The rights to things like game music, voice actors voices, sound effects, even artwork, are owned by several entities other than just Square and I can guarantee you they want to make sure that their work is only being used in the context of the game as that's what they have given their permission for. Many of the creators of this additional content may fall back to Square as a licensee of their work to make sure that other people are not profitting from what they have worked for.

Bumping for great justice. Also Baker Cat.OP, you should probably include Totalbiscuits new video in the OP to show people what the reality of the situation of this is. Here's a link to his video: (This is why I love Totalbiscuit)
They have that clause because they want to be the ones making money off of videos, you see.

Simple solution: Don't monetize your video....

A lot of Youtubers' content helps me to enjoy the game that much more and I will be sad to see a lot quality content not being made.
