FF XI Had a gambling mini-game and fishing was turned into a mini game( A REALLY fun good one... wish they woulda used for 14, fishing sooooo boring on 14 and horrid) as well as a connected but offline card game^^ Prob was more... but ya, that's just off top of my head. Been a few years! :P

Edit: Card game wasn't offline but had to log off FF 11 to go onto it :S That's what I meant hehe ... part of the POL experience >.>

I have played during the time when there was no mini-game, haha!
Mostly, I remember being a weaver in FFXI and it was frustrating because I had no control over my synthesis (unexplained failures are frustrating) and when going in the wild to get herbs, it was like FFXIV harvesting points: press the button and maybe you'll get something (there is absolutely no other interaction and no way to know what you are harvesting for -- I somewhat dislike WoW, by I have to give them credit: when they do gathering, they actually know what they are gathering and from a real game object, not a glow).

LOL cash shop! SE's way to tell their player how they appreciate them... pull the carrot and empty your pockets $$$
And to those who support it: you are kicking yourselves. -- We just need to sit back and laugh at people with cash shop items.
    (Marvelous economics IQ test!)

Exactly. Crafting in any game will *always* be repeatitive. There's no way to go around that. No matter how complex the minigame, no matter how puzzleish it is. You will still have to repeat it a million time, and when you're over the thousandth the minigame has become a chore for many.

In FXIV we *already* have a puzzle minigame, made more strategic by the addition of the inter-class abilities (which are what I would define a stroke of genius), but not overly complex to avoid being an excessive timesink. It's also made flexible by the ability that allows you to instantly complete (or lose 50%) an item, for when you need to chain-make lower level stuff (not that belgianrofl would know about that, considering his levels and actual experience of the game, which is near to zero).
It's a good balance, thing that can't be said about most other games.

The glow is very two sided imo... some stuff like harvesting make sense... tree's don't ... Using you Jig works... and mining is kinda in the middle lol The ingredients gather able in each though definitely needs to be dropped down! Gettin all diff branches, wood, fruit, and even feathers all from chopping same tree in same way with same animation... idk Guess I'm kinda in the middle with the glowy gather spots lol Atm it works... Just wish things would only have ONE HQ item not THREE lmao ... least for ingredients... keep armor hq caps and final products at +3 but don't make us carry around FOUR of the same material item *sigh* That's the REAL problem imo *^.^*

Also, becoming a quality crafter actually should take more time to master than becoming a battle master. It's way easier to learn how to destroy things than it is to learn how to build things and build them well. A four year old with a hammer can destroy a television, but I doubt I could repair one without electrocuting myself.
Unplug the television first and you should avoid being electrocuted

I actually agree, crafting needs to be more interesting, SE please take a look at how Vanguard did crafting it was much more interactive and required you to use an action bar with various skills.

I have also suffered the look of shame when someone catches me crafting >.>

The thing with this game is that it kind of requires you to at least level a few crafts so you can repair your own gear/weapons, I think I would easily quit crafting if there were more accessibly ways to repair gear (cheaper NPC costs for example)

I rip the axe from the head Covered in blood and brains Leave the body lying dead Ready to strike again
My sword cuts through clothes and skin Like a hot knife cuts through snow I smile as the bastard screams When I twist my sword
Sword in my hand Axe on my side Valhalla awaits me Soon I will die Bear skin on my back Wolf jaw on my head Valhalla awaits me When I'm dead

Were you embarassed being seen playing it?

But don't worry. We all know that no judgement is being passed. We all know that there's no real embarassment behind this post, since it's credibility is pretty much akin to sensationalistic and hyperbolic jibberjabber like "april 19th" and the supposed ebay sales coming with it.

In no game crafting is for everyone. It's that simple. Actually in FFXIV crafting is less boring than in 99.9% of other MMORPGs I played, where not only grinding any craft requires to perform repeatitive actions, but awareness is not required or encouraged at all, as one simply presses a single button and prays (or presses that single button and doesn't care, as he did that a million time, and he knows he'll have to do the same thing another million anyway), over and over and over.

FFXIV's crafting is quite deeper than that, and works well. Is it for everyone? No.
But again, in no game crafting is for everyone, and it shouldn't be, otherwise there wouldn't be a market.

Luckily for me, my girlfriend crafts quite a lot more than I do, and she isn't embarassed at all of me seeing her doing just that.

But of course you aren't as well.
Oh man I completely forgot about his April 19th is my final day line. Lol what a load of shit, can't even make good on his own promise of leaving the forums of the game he hates so much that he spends probably a good portion of his day here and in game. Mortal kombat must have not been that big of a deal. And although portal 2 is an amazing game, it took all of 15 hours for me to do the single player and coop levels, and that is a moderately slow playthrough. P2 is still a great game, don't want to knock it at all, but it was a ridiculous claim it would kill XIV.

If you're concerned with what people think of you playing any game, you probably care way too much what people think of you and I think we all know that's not true. I tell people all the time that I play FFXIV when it comes up and then correct the common misconceptions most gamers have about it.

I prefer a more engaging system for crafting than "Click start, walk away, done pass/fail."

I would be okay with them changing it, as long as it had some kind of mini-game. I'd prefer they took the time to make a fun mini-game for the crafting system as opposed to just being lazy and removing it all together.
