And yah, 185,000 concurrent users probably means 3-5x that number of actual accounts.

"could handle", for a value that includes a vaguely functional AH, BCNM stuttering, the occasional zone-to-black disconnect, and Promathia-help-your-soul lag if you had to go near a social hub. I know I could tell when the number trended above 3,000.

Actually, that sounds a lot like what we're seeing in XIV...

Oh gawd how I remember the hell of my first Beseiged event. Was all excited over it, joined some random party invite, spent some lead-up time perving on the tank's studly Elvaan profile, then cursed him/her out for doing ABSOLUTELY STUFF ALL when the fight started. He/she just stood there looking pretty for roughly 5+ minutes. Then all of a sudden he/she disappears & reappears about two blocks over and then I realised - it wasn't that he/she was doing jack shit - it was LAG!!

Damn but Beseiged was maniacal.

This^ I remember around 2004-2005 seeing well over 4k people on Garuda server, The way ARR is set up now it seems to have around 4k concurrent logins per server, seeing as XI could handle this 8-9 years ago they should have prepped for more than that. I'm just saying. It baffles me why every online game company tries to get away with the bare minimum and then has to scramble every single time at launch. It's better to have more resources and have to scale back than not enough to where people can not play and have to spend even more time trying to upgrade.

Here in IT our network and server admins do the same thing, barely give us space on our web or SQL server and then moan when they end up having to come in on a weekend to upgrade it later because they can't bring it down on weekdays. Always prep ahead!!

I'm sure your IT department has unlimited funds and is not required to cut costs as much as possible and is free to buy the most expensive equipment.
