I have the same issue with targeting. Selecting one target and attacking, then switching targets mid attack results in you hitting the new target once, then you switch back to the first target. This to me is more of a game mechanic issue than a controller macro issue. The only solution I have found is to press the O button or B on the xbox controller to deselect everything, then hit right or left to select target and start attacking, this allows you to keep attacking the same target. If you want to switch targets before the first one is dead, deselect before selecting the new one. Its a pain, but i've gotten use to it that I dont notice as much.

It would be much better to just select target, attack, switch target admist attacking and start attacking new target. Hopefully the devs will iron out this wrinkle.

I dont know of a way to switch r1 and l1.

There is no need to deselect everything. Try to switch target on mob B while attacking mob A, and press the "Confirm" button ("X" on PS3), you will switch target to mob B permanently (well, until you switch again to something else...)
