The way it works right now, player A could try to get in the game for hours without success whereas player B could get in at the first try. I think it's safe to say that this "method" is less than optimal.
Do you think a queue where people wait in line for 5 hours with [only] like 400 players in front of them would be received any better than what they have now?

For any queue to be good, you need a way to actually move that queue along (by servicing the people at the front of the queue or who made it in, and then kicking them out to make room for more). Imagine this as a restaurant that let people loiter at the table for hours/days after they buy their one meal. There is no queue that would fix that restaurant.
