While I don't yet know enough to dictate any overarching guidelines, I can show you a few examples of stat caps from our FC's crafting efforts in phase 4.

Was 5 materia the max you could put on heavy darksteel chest and legs, or could you go further?

I remember when yoshida was describing forbidden melding, you could forbidden meld onto the slot itself. Tho I didn't witness being able to select the slot to forbidden meld to myself. The way he described it tho, you would be able to get a buttload of materia onto one piece.

Yes, 5 materia is still the maximum.
