Game On!
Well I'll say this, Paladins main wepon is the shield, you are all about defending attacks to the fullest, where as Warrior is all about the axe and attacking harder to receive the most healing from your attacks, making it a little easier for the healers to keep you up.
Paladin seems to have a bit more utility as well for the entire group, where as Warrior seems to have the edge on damage.
Both 2 different play styles, one more defensive, one more offensive. Both great tanks
One thing that i feel needs to be said though. Dont just assume Warrior is better because they do more damage, while they do remember Paladin takes less damage many survival cooldowns, and also the ability protect other members in the grp from taking dmg. All depends on playstyleboth are great
Paladin takes way less damage then War in long fights. it also depends what content you are playing.
Personally I prefer PLD because in all honesty when you get to later levels and cross it with stoneskin and the damage mitigation abilities its pretty solid. also the shield mitigates a lot especially if you have high STR stat most the time I was blocking i was mitigating 20% or more. couple that with a good blocking shield and your on to a really useful tank.
War while good is more of an Aoe tank any PLD worth his salt should be able to easily hold hate from a war if they start at the same time. However, war is much better on the DPS side then PLD not by much but enough to help out in low DPS groups. I would say go war if it looks like you are lacking in damage otherwise go PLD.
in terms of fun.
I love PLD it requires you to use all the skills affectively and adapt to the situation. War is more a im just gonna hit everything as hard as I can tank.
I also played dragoon in 1.0. For release I'm planning to main WAR. I still love 2h weapons and love the over all image of WAR.
you get more action with warrior
Very true, should have specified that it aint worth crap in a dungeon. It will though let you solo tank FATE bosses (at least through the mid 30's) without any other heals. Not sure about end game FATES since beta only let us go to 35 and Yoshi stated they would be significantly harder.
I maxed out both gladi and mar in Phase 3 trying to decide with which one to main at release as i wanted to play a tank. From what i have experienced after alot of dungeon runs is that atm gladi is very badly optimized as a tank, flash doesnt work properly and its very hard to keep aggro on multiple targets if the group is not cooperating fully which happens almost always when you pug. Although im pretty confident they will patch this up soon after release and make gladi better in terms of aggro handling.
As for warrior, if you got a good healer you can easily keep aggro from everything and he is much more fun to play, overpower works wonders as an aoe skill, if you also level up a lancer to 22 and get his TP restoration skill you will become a beast. AOE spam for the win.
I've been thinking of the same thing as the OP. Going back and forth about which tanking class I want to main. I tend to agree with most of the people here that a warrior has a bit more stuff to keep track of during combat. Paladin dps is not even in the same realm of Warrior dps as well. But I've been a sword and board tank for years. Even managed to play one in single player rpgs. So Paladin it is for me.
One other thing is, maybe it was because it was just beta, but I did't have any issues using flash to aoe tank. Granted in pretty much all my runs the dps were competent and not attacking any and everything. But long as I rotated my threat abilities and kept flash in a part of my rotation I rarely ever had adds pull off.

you will succumb in every battle”

I don't know about most people, but I'll be doing both!
Bringing what ever is needed to the party.
