just Crafting class needs tobe 19 not fighting class..it was fun toget in p3..got carpentry to lvl 25 and lancer lvl 17Im not an expert but the beginning steps are you need to spiritbond your gear, to do this you simply wear it/use it till it reaches 100%. Then you need to raise a class to level 19 to get the quest to convert items into materia from one of the npcs at the bonfire in Thanalan. Once you do this you right click on your item and convert. This turns your items into materia. Next step is you need to have one of your crafting classes at level 19 (excepting Culinarian) and then do the other quest in the same place which will then allow you to bond your materia to new gear. I havent explored too much into melding but thats the basic start up process.
Some helpful advice here.

So just to make sure I'm getting this right, any class can create materia from spirit bound gear once the quest is complete?
It's only affixing materia that requires a crafting class (at 19+)?
You can't do it with every crafting class.
Only a crafter who can also craft the specific gear can put in materia.
correct but here is the precision
1) Once you unlock the convert quest it is true that ANY class can convert gear to materia (when the spiritbond is at 100%)
2) Once you unlock to melding abilities only certain class can meld materia to gear let's take this item per exemple
http://xivdb.com/?item/2938/Gryphonskin-Bandana
Since it's crafted by a Leatherworker, only a Leatherworker can meld materia into that gear
Ah, I sold all my old 100% spirit-bonded gear so far![]()
how do you know the max stats each gear can have? per its level?
or should i ask what is the math behind it..?
I was wondering about materia as well so thank you for all the information posted here. Was really helpful.
Looks like I better start working on my crafting classes
