I second .hack (especially G.U.) and add Shadow Hearts.

I always loved the .hack//series in all it's forms of media.
I must admit however that the games only captured my attention for 2 reasons:

1) Wanting the story line of what happens
2) The novelty of running around and exploring a world I've watched and loved in an anime as well as meeting and interacting with the characters of that world

The game play itself was liable to drive me crazy... "Okay, go raid a dungeon Ralos! (Read: Kite) You want to continue the story now? Oh okay, in that case raid this dungeon! Hmm? You want a side quest? Got it! you can raise or grunty OR... you can raid this dungeon! You want to grind? need new equipment? looking to explore? Well there's a dungeon over there you could raid!"

Admittedly, G.U. did much better at keeping me entertained with game play but I liked I.M.O.Q's story and characters better.

Now if we could just get this whole Virtual Reality thing to be a bit more prominent in the real world, ARR would be the sole owner of my life and soul =)

Goodness grief, looks like you were right. I just got another press release from Crytek basically stating "sorry, we were wrong!"

I played G.U. shortly before FFXIV started alpha and one of reasons why I chosen FFXIV was because it had a gamepad mode, so it felt like .hack... even though the combat system is totally different.

With the whole Oculus Rift hype... I hope they will stop making useless sequels that are blatant attempts to milk the .hack name (I'm looking at you, .hack//Link; .hack//Beyond the World) and do a real The World MMO.

Anyway, one of my favorites has always been Rogue Galaxy. Also, the xenosaga series.
